Yesterday, I took a ride with my brotger-in-law to a friends gunsmith shop for some warenty service work on a rifle.
As they spoke I spotted this gem on the wall kinda hiden behind all the custom rifles.
Could that be??? It looks pretty short! Quick scan did. Ot turn up a case... BUT WAIT! Whats that under the bench near the g
Register. YES, its a mustard yellow and rusty red fringe. Could be...
They finish the transaction and I ask to see the rifle.
He goes on about what he thinks it is. Calling it a specail modle from research and development because the numbers on the side state "RD" then three digits.
What IS lil strange is I dont see SAVAGE 24 on the side as I should. Barrels say calibers (22 LONG RIFLE & 20 GAUGE 2 3/4 inch) Ill bring it to work and look it over real well.
The stocks have been refinished. The forend dosent "snap" on very securely. The butt has a chipout beside the trigger and a crack has started at the wrist. (Ill fix that crack today before it gets any worse) there is a black scorch mark on the butt as well. Appears to be from a lighter but its under the new finish. The finish was done. Nicely applied. But not origional it was done a while ago as it has no small.
The steel appears to have been refinished as well. Its nicely matt blued like a old GI-45. I did not see any pits and engraving appeared sharp so done well. (Do not think its factory. But if it is its in beautiful condition) Its trigger is darn good too!! Breaking at a crisp 6#!
Im very happy with it. I have passed on so many looking for this one. Either the previous where ratty or ratty and too costly or too nice or really nict AND costly! I wanted one that I could use and not worry about a bang or ding. I got it!
Price was 550, but we haggled. He told me how they are rare and go for far more online. I explained the reality. Showed him what it had wrong with it and how this one could not command a premium. Told him he may find someone with deep
Pockets to jump. But this was what I was looking for but could. Ot spend that for it. Fortunately he bought it at a sane price and accepted my offer of 400. We have known each other since college age He is a fair and good man & Gunsmith. (No he wont work on 24's! Haha) I used to help his dad before he passed so we trust each other he knows I dont buy to sell so we agreed at cost and he made a profit.
I had a pistol match last night and was even able to fire the RF barrel!
I did first clean out the muck it had inside!! Like many 22s it has been shoot and not cleaned. Haha.
The case is intact actually in very nice condition with only a couple spots with a tear/hole from folding. The rawhide is good probably replaced and lining stained but not ripped at all.
This was a grail gun for me and I am elated at finding it!
