Hello everyone, it's the new guy again. Having read a little on chamber adapters I was wondering if anyone could give me input on these questions: #1- I guess my options are to shoot either 22LR through either the 223 barrel or the 20g barrel using adapters. I see most people here use the 223 chamber adapter. Which brand are you using? How is the a accuracy? Is there any chance of damaging the barrel chamber when using the steel insert? #2- Anyone here use the 5" rifled 20g to 22LR adapter? Is there any possibility this could damage the full choke? I am concerned about this only because the round is offset in the adapter to allow the hammer to strike the rimfire cartridge. #3- Which option is preferred? I hope these are good relevant questions. I tried to read up on stuff to avoid asking stuff that's already been covered. Thanks.

If accuracy is one of your goals adapters won't cut it. I would expect the .223/.22lr would give you the best results. I don't think you will achieve minute of squirrel groups though. I preach reloading the .223 to do what you need. Very easy and probably cheaper than buying decent .22lr ammo.

Good advice. I think I am just going to stay with the original 223/20g configuration which I really like. Thanks!

I have adapters for the 223 barrel & a 2 3/4" 22LR one for the 20 ga. Bullet diameter for 22LR is .223" while 22 centerfires have a bore diameter of .224"; better accuracy can be had by an adapter for 22WMR through the top barrel. The short adapter is surprisingly accurate through the shotgun barrel; but I'm shooting off a rest, with open sights, at 50 yards - just orient the offset rimfire round in the same position for each shot (I use the '12 o-clock' position and am content with that).
I also reload. With the recent expense & difficulty finding rimfire ammo, I've been working on reduced loads for the 223 Rem. I've recently added casting my own 22 cal. bullets to the mix, so I'm sure I'll arrive at the performance level I'm looking for eventually.... In the meantime, experimenting is half the fun!
Some of the various adapters I have were inherited from my grandfather, and are not marked with the manufacturer. The various ones I have purchased, I got from MCA Sports/Ace Bullet in Alaska (they're online, I don't know how to do all the fancy stuff that would give you the link). I've been satisfied with their products, and think about other calibers I may want to acquire in the future.

I have cast my own also but couldn't get any real accuracy from them. I use a copper plated 40 gr. bullet made for .22 magnum and 4 grains of AA2 powder. Shoots quarter size groups at 50 yds. Nothing to brag about but ok for taking squirrels. Also 8 gr. of Unique is a verry good load but shoots too fast and just wrecks small game.

Yeah, I'm with you: a friend 'loaned' me (I still have it, he doesn't want it back) a double cavity Lee mold in .225". It is identified as 55 gr., but my mystery metal comes out at closer to 49 gr. Anyway, what a pain to cast! I love Lee products and have several other molds in larger calibers, but with the .22, I probably average one decent bullet for every 6 or 7 cast. I tried loading in my .22 Hornet (Browning low wall) and .222 Rem (Sav Mdl 24) but my results are no better...possibly worse...than your report. So I'm back to jacketed bullets. I'd love to hunt for tree squirrels; the eastern grey squirrel is considered a pest here, but it looks so similar to the western grey squirrel (which is protected) that I'm hesitant to do so. So my small game hunting is limited to ground squirrel (aka, sage rat) of which there is no shortage. Since we're not meat hunting, we go for the 'red mist' effect.* I think if I were certain of the tree squirrel species, I'd have to consider head shots only. *yes, the Belding Ground Squirrel (it looks like a 20%-sized prairie dog) is considered a pest, inasmuch as colonies can create holes endangering livestock. Ranchers welcome responsible hunters, even to the point of hosting steak dinners for successful weekend hunts.
