Howdy from S. Mississippi Always wanted a rifle/shotgun combo. Picked up a rough (Bluing rusted [not deep] in many places(receivers worst),stock missing some wood on either side of the breakdown lever, plastic trigger guard broken, one scope base mount holes threads stripped.kinda finiky when breaking open) -SAVAGE 24V SERIES D- WESTFIELD,MA. CAL 223 REM
Ser #D954161 The gun has a checkered forend and checkered pistol grip(white stripe under checkered plastic/bakelite cap),monte carlo stock with plastic/bakelite butt plate.Swivel stud in stock and barrel band. Bores are fine. Both barrels(24") shoot, but ejection is questionable. Are the ejectors selective or empties pulled out manually? Any info about age, value, etc. appreciated as are any suggestions whether to redo it or not. I have a Boyd's stock for it already. How can i tell if it's a re-bored .222 and which is more desirable ? That's about it for now.Chuckle,Chuckle. Thanks in advance. Steve

Welcome Steve,
You've certainly come to the right place for Savage 24 Wisdom. Search through the posts and you'll find the answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet.
I don't claim Wisdom, I've just had a Love / Hate affair with my 223/12G Savage 24 the last 9 years.
First up these barrels only have Extractors not Ejectors. So the Cases will be raised slightly for manual removal. So you don't throw unfired cases/shells away.
You are spot on with the rebarelled 222 comment. 1-14 twist 222 era design barrels were used for the 223s. The Rifle barrel is very accurate if you use light projectiles. Vancouver mike gave great advice on projectile selection, when he said treat it like a 222 with a 223 amount of powder. Most any light, short 50-55 grain or less SP/BT projectile that is loaded for factory 222 ammo will work "stabilise or group well". Longer FMJ or heavier will be unstable and groups, accuracy will suffer. I've had 69 gn match ammo keyhole sideways at 25m. Fun stuff if you want to set-up your Shooting buddies at the range.
Hope this helps some. Have fun with your "New Toy"

Thanks hairytully. Seems the questions I asked require some research. I looked all over my rifle for a circle w/a letter for the date.nada I guess I'll put the new stock on and shoot the crap out of it. Steve
