Ran into a couple 24 Ps, both were 22LR/20 gauge. One at Cabela's Woodbury, MN Gun Library for $567, and one at the St. Paul RiverCentre Gun Show this morning for $457. Both are perfect except the Cabela's one had very dirty barrels. There was another nice 24 at the gun show that was a 22WMR/20 gauge. Didn't get the price. The stock was refinished and it was quite nice. I didn't catch the exact model and there was no price on it.

Replaced my sights with a Marlin 60 set of Williams Firesights. Had a gunsmith (local) drill and tap a new hole for the sight, profile the base, and fit the front sight. However, the rear dovetail was cut wrong from the factory with a 10 degree cant to the right. The local GS quoted me $300 plus to fix. After contacting Odenthal GS and Joe's Sporting Goods GSs, I was referred to Laib's GS in Spicer (2 1/2 hour drive). Went yesterday. This guy is the greatest. He is replacing the slug that the dovetail is cut into, and recutting the dovetail for $125, including re-blueing the barrel. Says it will be a week and a half. Have my fingers crossed that this fixes my sighting issues.

Got my rear dovetail replaced by Laib's Gunsmithing in Spicer, MN. Pat Laib removed the slug from the barrel, soldered on a new slug and cut a new level dovetail. He also removed all the barrel dings, re-blued the barrel, installed the Williams Firesight (Marlin 60 sight), and boresighted it. It looks like a new gun! The Laib's crew searched high and low for screws to fit the Lyman 53D for about 45 minutes, when Pat returned from a doctor appointment. We had already figured out the screw size 5-40 and he remembered Burris uses that for scope ring. He found a pair, shortened them and installed the sight. $125 total. Pat is an awesome gunsmith.

Thanks. It's a bit of a hassle for me to get to the range. Bill's Gun Shop has a 50 yard indoor range, but is closed on Sundays. I have my 89 year old Dad on Saturdays. All the outdoor ranges are closed to the public once the deer season starts. I might try bunny/squirrel hunting in a nearby Wildlife Management Area (no target shooting allowed though). Hopefully, the weather will cooperate here in Minnesota. Meanwhile, I am starting on fixing up Dad's Remington model 11. Stocks are being refinished at the moment. I am trying to keep it looking period. He got it in 1947. If my buddy gets a hankering to do a range day on a seniors Monday, I will take the 24 there. We usually just shoot handguns.

Finally got this gun 24S-D, and my newer gun, a 24V-D out to the range. Had to drive to a Wisconsin DNR range (1 1/2 hour drive) because every range in MN is a club that requires you to pay, and come on a Saturday (public). WI's DNR ranges are free and open every day (Thanks WI!). Both guns shoot well to 50 yards and the 24V-D shoots well to 100 yards with the iron sights. Unfortunately, when I fired 20 gauge slugs, the 24S-D popped off the reflex sight with the "Savage Model 24 O/U Shotgun Scope Optic Mounts Perfect Adapter™ by Gun-Guides®" mount still attached. I was skeptical about this mount since it is one piece and pinches the grooves by flexing. When you tighten onto the rail top, you are pinching it at the top and , I think, un-pinching the bottom. It seemed tight, but... you know. The 24V-D had a (cheap)rimfire scope on it from my Dad's old Ruger 10/22. Needless to say, zero was not zero after firing slugs. I've ordered Weaver T-22 mounts that should be here tomorrow (Thanks Amazon) for the 24S-D, and I will look around for a decent, but modestly priced (around $100), scope for the 24V-D. I'm thinking 3x9x40. Both guns ran fine, with the ejectors working as they should. Why was I shooting slugs? To see where they land with the rifle sighted in. My Marlin 336W with Cabela 3x9x40 and Ruger 10/22 with UTG 3.8" ITA Red/Green CQB Dot Sight were good at both 50 and 100 yards, although the Ruger's red/green dot covers the bull on my targets at 100 yds. I don't think I'll be shooting squirrels at 100 yards, but I should be OK.

Sounds like quite a project and nice story!!
On your scope issues;
The 24V has a couple options.
First I dont care fore for two reasons. Its the shoot thru bases. Fries I dont care for this style as it mountes the scope up high and isnt good for ergonomics and there for overall accuracy. But some like it as it provides sighting system for rifle and shotgun as most of these Regulation is so far off.
The second is a Weaver 74 base. The screws are small be sure you clean out and degrease the holes and screws and dont get too heavy handed they strip easily. Use red loc tite on the screws and mount the base. Allow a good couple days before use. But you can mount the scope straight after with no worries. On the Rimfire 24S-D barrel, most are even marked NOT to mount a scope for shotgun use. Because they are not real solod and at very least get knocked out of accuracy. I have found using a better AIRGUN scope base designed for grooved 3/8 or 10mm grooves works PERFECTLY! Its about 4-6” long. Clamps along its entire length! So its buku strong. Cost is 30-80$ depending upon maker. Pyramid air has them but so do ebay. Then choose a LIGHT short scope. This too is important as lighter has less mass to work back and forth under recoil. I like small red dot sites.
Good luck

Thanks.
I don't want to drill my barrel, so the Weaver mount won't work for me.

I do. I was looking for a Weaver style so I can use a red dot. I already own a couple of Burris fast fires. I was disappointed with your experience with the 'perfect' mount.
