Tomorrow I should get a call that a Savage I have looked for for the better part of thirty years will come into my possession. Its a 24V series D in 357/20g. Its not pristine. It appears to have lived a full life for its previous owner. Most likely was a truck gun for someone not knowing ir caring about its rarity.
It has evidence of moisture and salty hands wrapped arounf its middle.
Its stock was cracked at both top sides of tge tang and rapaired function over looks.
Its a shooter but was paid for accordingly. Im thrilled to have it!
I have some pics but will post some I take after I receive it.
Im pretty excited for tomorrow..

I picked it up last night and headed straight to the range!! The rifle only has iron sites, so this was mostly a function test. I ran a patch down the barrel and wiped it down. In doing so the “repair” that was done at the tang came loose. (I knew it was suspect) Then saw that the stock was loose a but. I was still able to shoot but only a few times. I didnt want to make things worse. As expected and because of the loose stock my group was strung vertical. But one slug and five 357 rounds went into a group 2” wide by 5” tall almost centered on a 50 yard target. The trigger is quite nice with no creep and little over travel. Later at home I repaired the stock and I feel its gonna be useable. ( I was planning on replacing it) it actually has some Nice figure for a Savage. (Seldom any is the norm) I need to mix up some accuglass as a filler. Seems someone decided to file the insides of the wood along the tang. Leaving unsightly gaps looking as if the wood has warped away from the steel. Crown is good, action is tight scope holes are not stripped. Never appears to have had a base mounted.

It looks a lot nicer than you portrayed it in you original post.
Congrats!

I just bought a 24V that is supposed to arrive today. It has a gold/brass trigger guard that seems out of place. Looking at replacements, I see they seem to be plastic. Is yours plastic or blued steel?

It looks a lot nicer than you portrayed it in you original post. Congrats! Thank you!! Most of the “issues” are now cosmetic. Someone filed the wood along the sides of the tang. Making unsightly gaps where the wood meets steel. I repaired the repairs and tightended the stock bolt. I see that the angle of the “pocket” the tang is in is off a bit causing the stock to dip down toward the trigger. I can see a thin gap at the bottom Of the tang behind the trigger. But the top behind the barrel release is very tight. Ill fix that and it should improve looks substantially. Im thinking accu glass along the insides to build back up what was ground off. Its 98% cosmetic. Hoping to receive my 74 scope base today or tomorrow. Then Ill mount up my Leupold VXII 1x4 scope. CW

Is yours plastic or blued steel? Mine is plastic too. My 22/410 is a very early gun is the only metal trigger guard I have on a 24. CW

I wish they offered it clear anodized. I'd get one for my B-DL.

Scope base came so thats all mounted in red loc tite. Started better fitting the butt. Apparently I got a touch ham handed and instead of removing a few thousandths I actually removed a few tenths. SO, now Im forced to work of the sides to allow the entire butt to move and mount forward. Im about half way there now. And the but is far and away tighter and more solid. Must not have had good angles. Right now, with no rear contact and just a hand finger tight bolt, its much more solid then it was with bolt torqued down. I ordered a 3/4” decellorator pad in blk leather face. (Grind to fit) Ill chop 1.5” off the butt and fit this when it arrives. I always find Savage stocks to be 1/2” to 3/4” too Long. CW

Sounds like you have more of a project gun then I do. They are fun to work on though. My 24V-D (.222/20ga) arrived from TX, and so did the trigger guard. It took an evening just to clean the gunk out of the receiver. I think it was a "truck gun". I redid the bluing, so the all the rub spots mostly disappeared. The DIP trigger guard is not an exact fit , but it works. The curve on the rear side doesn't quite match the receiver. It still looks a lot better than the brass plated one that came on it. the front screw has to be on first and then the back, otherwise it won't fit. Also had to fix the Pachmayr recoil pad as the bottom screw was spinning in the hole. I used TiteBond polyurethane to fill the hole and then pushed an awl into it when it dried to get the screw started. It's on super tight now. I also put some boiled linseed oil on the stocks after cleaning them. I ordered sling swivels and they will be here tomorrow. Thanks Amazon. Unfortunately, Saturdays I spend with my 90 yo Dad and that is the 1 day the range has public shooting. I will try to get there next Saturday if the MN weather permits. I need to sight in my 24 S-D as well. Good luck with your weapon.
