Hello and welcome!
The 222/20 is a popular chambering and a pretty comon caliber for many folks.
It can be a real good shooter but it is designed upon lighter bullets. Mine wont shoot heavier than 55 & even those are not nearly as accurate as 50 and lighter. Of coarse the weight is meanless its the OAL of the bullet. I have the same rifle and I also have a 223/20. Neither one will shoot heavy bullets accurately. My MVP shoots 60g V max bullets almost 1/4 MOA... I have fired a few fromThe Savage. I know tge gun went iff and I know the bullet exited the barrel... much more than that I cannot say as nothing hit the target or backstop.
Much information here abouts for you to read. Plus some knoledgable folks too.
Know that things run real slow here. So dont be too impatient.
Good luck with your new lead lobber!

I picked up the rifle off a long time family friend, who used it for turkey mainly. I plain on the same with maybe a few trips to the ground hog fields. but mainly my daughter will probably use it more for hunting then I will. I have been reading the site off and on gaining some info

Hello got a few questions.
1. Per savage my gun was made in 1971 I was wondering if anybody might have a clue to what the twist would be
2.I know the gun dose not have a true ejector but the little thing that looks like one has all kinds of movement when you open the action. but once you fire a round it gets stuck tight to the chamber I need to stick the tip of my knife in it to loosen it up to remove the spent shell is this normal? or should it have a little movement to pop back a little on it own ?

If it hasn't been shot in a while, you may need to scrub out the chamber with a brush and some bore cleaner. Both the .22 and 20 gauge barrels stuck when I first get my S-D. Now the .22 does on occasion, but you just finger the exposed extractor. Also, pull the extractor and spring, and clean it and the extractor hole. Oil and dirt work their way in and make goo. Blow out the holes with compressed air. If you lube the extractor, do it sparingly. Make sure you don't turn the extractor screw in too far. Turn it in until it makes contact and then back it out a ways so the extractor can move freely. I cleaned my V-D this way and no sticking ever. If none of that works, you could replace the spring (they can eventually get weak with use) or put a small spacer in to preload the spring. A spacer would have to be short enough to let the spring compress without binding. Probably just needs cleaning.

I believe you're correct, and the .223 shares the same twist. That's why the model 24 is limited to lighter bullets in those calibers.

There's probably a spring in there. You may need a little punch or tweezer to pull it out. If it's gunky it won't fall out.

If you end up needing a spring, I bought an assortment of ejector/extractor springs from Wolff Gunsprings. If you can give me the diameter of the coil, and the wire diameter, I should be able to send you one that will work. You'd just have to cut it to length.
Let me know.

Yeah, its common. It actually will create suction behind the extractor, like getting your foot stuck in mud.

Save yourself some money and stick with stubby 50-55gn projectiles max. The 1-14" twist lets you fire the Lighter projectiles pretty fast. But my 223/12G 1-14" barrel limits me to 55gn Nosler BT, which it can shoot under MOA. 69gn Sierra BTHP hit sideways at 25M.
