I plan to hop over the state line again this year to hunt Deer in Indiana (Yes even though they force you to pay a kings ransom to hunt the kings deer). I've got a beauty of a Series D in .357 that I'd like to put to actual feild use before retiring it to the gun safe or mantle permanently as a braggars peice(yes, i'm going to risk an imperfection on the finish-its ok!). Anyone else use their .357 to hunt Deer? I'd like to know what kind of specific ammunition (all the nerdy specifics)people are using for this application as well as their anticipated or proven effective ranges with their ammo. I've heard of "Buffalo Bore Ammo" Heavy 357 Magnum Ammo - 180 gr. Hard Cast" ammo by Buffalo Bore that is supposed to be pretty effective with increased pentration, greater velocity and delayed expansion and all that. Any other suggestions supported by reasons and experience? Time to make some decisions here in Cincy. Gotta get the new ammo and tune her in just right before opening day - Just a month away! Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions! Mike

My non-experienced reply (I have other guns I use for deer, therefore have never used a .357 mag....I'm guessing you don't have big mule deer in Indiana/Ohio): if I were going to use a .357, I'd certainly consider a 180 gr. hard cast. At 1860 fps (Buffalo Bore's stated velocity from 18.5" Marlin), that velocity/combo killed a lot of deer in the past and would do so now. It's not optimal, but as usual, bullet placement is more important than any other factor.
I'd also consider their 158 gr. JHP @ 2153 fps....now you're in 30-30 velocities; it doesn't supercede them, as advertised, but does equal the 30-30.
If you reload, there's no reason why you couldn't use 158 gr. or higher LSW (Keith type). Plenty of choices from bullet-makers, or cast your own. I always use GC bullets when I intend to exceed 1200 fps. Yeah, I know....not necessary with really hard cast bullets, but my casting metal is always sort of a mystery, and so far, I've avoided leading.

when reloading lead bullets in 357 max and 308 I always use gas checks--its just too easy to use them and then I can shoot a litle hotter I have some 357max reloads reloaded with a "rifle" jacketed style bullet--it 147gr at about 2200fps

I have a 24V,D like new .357 over 20. It's cut to 18.5 inches, threaded for chokes and reamed to .357 Maximum. There's no way it's gonna hang over the fireplace....at least not while I'm still kicking.

Anything I own are not wall hangers, even if some might value them as such. Even if I ever get a German Drilling combo one day, its going into the woods with me. Why leave it scratch less when I can enjoy it now

Is there enough metal in the .357 mag barrel to ream to .35 Remington? Has anyone tried this? Or maybe .35/30-30?

I'm interested to read the answers to your question. I have a Handi Rifle .357 reamed to .356 Winchester. It handles a stout load in .356 head spacing on the rim or .358 Win. head spacing on the shoulder. I don't have a clue if the 24's barrel and frame can take that.

OK, I'll take a statistics stab at this question....first, measure the overall width of the .357 barrel.
Nominal base diameter for the .357/38 Special is .379", rim is .440"; " " " " " 30-30 " .422", " " .506"; " " " " " .35 Rem " .458", " " .460" (rimless cartridge)
do your guzintas, and you'll see there better be a lot of metal in the barrel to bore out to either cartridge. That's why, I suspect, that anyone wanting more power than a .357 Mag either bores it out to .357 Max or buys a factory-chambered 30-30.
In the FWIW category, years ago I owned a German drilling I picked up for a song on a visit to Munich: double-barrel 16-gauge, .22 LR and 7.62x51mmR. The price was so good, even though I knew I'd have to do some sort of crazy cartridge conversions for the rifle barrel, I figured I could at least shoot the other barrels, maybe find some Commie source for that weird rifle cartridge.
Subsequently glad I looked it up before sending off to Finland or Southern Slobovia for cartridges; 7.62x51mmR is Euro-trash talk for 30-30.
Anyway, it was fun to load for. Since it was a single-shot, I loaded all kinds of pointy bullets for it. Now, of course, Hornady has their FTX, but still, it's pretty easy to load 30-30 to and beyond standard 35 Rem energies.
And, of course, check off another gun I wish I hadn't sold.....

Here's a picture of my 24V, D, reamed to .357 Maximum, cut to 18.5 inches and threaded for chokes. The other rifle is my new Handi shorty 16.5 inch .45-70. Pete
