I've been interested in adding a Savage 24 chambered in .22 Hornet / 20 gauge to my list of "I finally got one", but have been unsuccessful so far. I'm a frugal (read cheap) collector, and not willing to throw large amounts of money at any firearm, just to get one. One would think with the .222 and .223 pretty much replacing the .22 Hornet, especially for re-loaders,that there would be a few of them around for sale. I own a .22 Hornet in another firearm, and find the Hornet ammo hard to find, and very expensive! So, here are a few questions: 1. Just how many 24s were manufactured with the .22 Hornet rifle barrel? 2. What do most of you use your .22 Hornets for? 3. Is the gun best shot with iron sights, or is it long enough range to make a scope more desirable? 4. How many, and what were the variations of 24s in the .22 Hornet? 5. Is this round acceptable for coyote hunting in the east, where we have shorter distance shots? 6. Do a lot of our members have a 24 chambered in the .22 Hornet, and are you willing to do a "show and tell" about your gun? 7. Is the .22 Hornet too much for squirrel and rabbits? 8. I have 24s chambered in .22Mag and .222Rem., am I wasting my time and money pursuing a .22 Hornet...I also do re-loading of my .222 and .223? 9. Anyone have any "hunting stories" that you'd be willing to share that might shed light on the viability of this round as a hunting round? 10. Any one have one that you want to sell or trade for another Savage 24 model?
Thanks, and I hope we'll get a good discussion on the .22 Hornet...or am I the only one interested in this obsolete round?

Wow what a list what for: well my pop has had 12/22hornet for years and uses it for turkey and I just recentley got one also so I'll be using it this march for spring gobbler variations: only 2 that I know of 24F and 24V too much: yeah I think 22hornet is way too much for squirrels and rabbits-- but coons/possums/armadillos and certain turkey pullet eating flying critters are 22 hornet fare varmints: it is a killer (no pun) for coyote/bobcat--as an aside I had a Taurus ragin hornet revlover (8 shot/10" barrel) w/ red dot and it was as good a coyote gun as you would ever want wasting you time: no I don't think so IF you can find one that won't break the bank--there was one on gun broker that I stopped bidding at $775--I was clearly having a moment of insanity

I recently found a long sought after M6 Scout in 22 Hornet, started reloading for it and hunt with it alot. I worked up a small game load, but before I did, I found S&B 45grn solid round nose ammo that was acceptable for squirrel and rabbit. I've found it perfect for medium sized game like large porcupine, turkey, coyote and would consider it an extreme option for whitetail deer (close range, like archery close). I bought a Lee Classic loader at the recommendation of another member and love it, takes about 20 seconds to make a complete round. One can of Hogdgon's Lil' Gun will make 670 rounds (with max charge) and nearly double that with my small game load. I say go for it.

Thanks for the feedback BigKelly and LoganBoone. I'm trying to find a Savage 24 in .22 Hornet/20Ga. to match up to my TC Contender in .22 Hornet. I haven't done any hunting yet with the Contender .22 Hornet, but sounds like you had pretty good success with it in your Taurus Ragin Hornet. I had coyote in mind for the Savage 24 in .22 Hornet/20Ga. Looks like it would cover both situations of them running in close and a longer shot also. I have a pound of Lil' Gun sitting on my reloading shelf loganboone. I've got to pick up some hollow point bullets, and I'll be covered. I've got a Rock Chucker, but am looking for a Lee hand loader, due to the thinness of the Hornet brass. My Contender is scoped, with a 10" barrel. Should do real well on coyotes...I'm hoping!

The .22 hornet round is the 4th least common caliber in the model 24 line following the .357 Maximum (1st rarest) and .17 HMR (second rarest) and .357 Magnum (3rd rarest). The catalogs show the 24V Series D in .22 hornet over 20 gauge available from 1980-1983. It makes its next appearance in the 24F-12T as .22 hornet over 12 gauge from 1990-1993 and in the 24F Predator as .22 hornet over 20 gauge and 12 gauge from 1990-1993.

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm still looking for a Savage 24 .22 Hornet / 20 Gauge. Odell, of the top four you mention, I have a .357 Mag over a 20 gauge. I have since bought a Thompson Centender Contender carbine in stainless and wood,.22 Hornet 23" scoped barrel. It would be great if someone that owns a 24 in .22 Hornet / 20 gauge would give us a field report, especially a hunting field report. Has anyone had any success with "both" barrels on coyote?

Still looking? I presume you're lurking on all of the various I-gun sites (Gunsamerica, Gunbroker, Guns International, Auction Arms, etc.). I've never seen one, but have had a few 22 Hornet and love shooting them, especially on the smaller varmints. I can, literally, shoot my Browning low wall all day long and the barrel never heats up (at least too much).

I too, looked for a 24 V in .22 Hornet over 20 gauge for years, only ever found one for sale and it was sold before I ever put a bid in on it. I have (I think) every 24V centerfire made except for the .22 hornet, I finally gave up looking for one. And I say I think I have them all, because years ago, Dr. Cable from here mentioned a 24V he had seen at a gun show in Alaska chambered in .219 Zipper and told me about it, but I never got a chance to follow up on it as to wether it was a single gun produced by Savage or a catalogued item. He said the barrel was stamped .219 zipper and looked factory stamped as I recall.
For me the .22 Hornet in a 24V was and still is the hardest one for me to come up with. I have multiple 24V's in .222 over 20, .223 over .20, 30-30 over 20, and a transition 24V in 30-30 over 12. A single .357 Mag, a first year 1979 model, and a .357 Max bought sight unseen on a tip here I followed up that is absolutely pristene.
But no 24V in .22 Hornet over 20 gauge for me, LOL.

Sorry to not being able to give you a hunting field report but have a 24F that I bought at the Homedale, Idaho gun show a few months ago. I shot it in original Hornet configuration with accuracy hovering around the 1" range using Lil Gun and the 45 gr. Sierra. Same accuracy once I reamed it out to K-Hornet using the Graybeard reamer rental. I took a piece of an .005" feeler gauge and stuck it in between the front barrel ring at the 5 O'clock position to bring the POI of the Brenneke slugs closer in line with the rifle POI. Slugs were still low on target but shot loads seemed pretty well centered. It is a pretty ugly, heavy gun but is real accurate. Am in hospital now so no pictures. It is roughly finished and horrible trigger but accurate!

I found this 22hornet/20ga last weekend at a gunshow in Belton, Texas. I had pretty much given up finding one when I stumbled upon it. It is pristine to boot! I paid $500 and felt good about the price I paid.

I think you did well. Nice grain in the wood. I would strip and restain the fore end to match the stock, should be easy to do but that is just me.

I hope you'll give us a range/field report on the .22 Hornet barrel... and the specifics on the ammo you used. I'd love to happen up on one like that. Enjoy!

I really like to be able to hold a gun in my hands, and inspect it before I lay down my hard earned $100 bills. I'll keep looking for the right gun at the right price. It's hard for me to enjoy a gun that I've overpaid for!
