Hey guys. New to the forum. Joined because im tryin to find out if savage ever made the model 24 in the 22lr over 20 g combo? I squirrel hunt with dogs and that combo would be perfect for squirrel. I have a 24v in 22 hornet/20g, but the rifle is a bit much for bushy tails. My grandfather has 22 mag/20g, still too much power unless you can make head shots. So... Was the 22lr/20g ever made? And if it was, how hard would it be to get my hands on one?

Welcome to the forum, yes they did make them. I just bought my first one about a month ago and it's a 22/20ga and they are a awesome little gun. Only used mine for some pest control so far in the neighbour lady's barn and around my house shooting 3 raccons,2 possums and 2 skunks. As for being hard to find I am not sure how hard they are to find down in the states but myself being from Canada they are very hard to find up here. I have been keeping an eye out for one here for quite a few years and did see the odd 22/410 but this was the first 22/20 I had ever seen for sale up here and I ended up having to pay $550 to get it. I have seen other members on here talking about gun broker being a good place to check for them. Good luck.

Yes I think 22lr/20ga is the most common combination. So all else being equal, should be the least expensive. I have two. A 24C camper with the short barrels and a 24 S-E. The S-E I just picked up a few months ago for $425 in nice shape.

Almost as soon as i posted this thread i found one. And bought it... Black synthetic and crossbolt safety, which is new to me. My hornet/20g doesnt have that. I paid a little more than i wanted to, but when you find a gun you need that isnt in production any more, sometimes ya gotta take a hit. Ill post some picks when it arrives.
In an off note, is anyone other than me dissapointed in savage with the model 42? Its only available in a youth frame and .410 is all you can get on the bottom barrel. I like the manufacturers making guns to get kids into outdoor sports, but here in wv, we at least start our kids out with a 20 gauge. I feel this model 42 has no purpose other than shootin cans....

Up until a few years ago, I felt that the 22/410 was all I needed when out at the farm. Nothing larger than an armadillo ever bothered us. Now that we have wild hogs as pests, I have gone to the 22/20. I don't have much confidence in the hottest 410 buck loads, but that 20 will stop anything that needs stopping. Plus, the 22 is great snake medicine. I think you made a great choice with your new 22/20.

I do know what you mean and had the same reservations, but used within its range its lethal as any 12, 16 or 20ga. Its available in adequate sizes, its moving at the same velocities. Its single down fall is less pellets. BUT any good buck shot hunter will tell you, it may be loose shot, but its used as if it was a single projectile. Plus you also have a excellent loading form RWS its a 3'' Breneke slug.
So I do understand, what your saying, but don't discount the 410 on looks or paper ballistics. It CAN handle large game if your are more of a hunter than shooter.

Well guys the gun is in and in great condition. As soon as i figure out how, ill put a pic on here.
CW i agree about the .410 being good within its range, but that range isn't very far. The oaks here are tall and a .410 usually knocks squirrels out of the tree just so they can climb back up again, especially when the leaves are on. Ive just never had much use for one if it wasnt in a judge. The 20 is just so much more versatile. And all of them ive seen are chambered for 3" shells. That as enough for turkey for most people (not me tho lol)
