Hello,Glad I found this forum....I have a question I need answered but I am not dumb to guns just want to make sure of something before I go shooting my Savage 24-P (22wmr(f)/20g.).Just want to know what shells I can shoot from my 20g as it doesn't say anything about the choke if there is any at all. As far as I can tell it looks like a smooth bore. I got this passed down to me from my Dad a few years back after my Mom passed away(He passed away a few years before her). He had it forever but I never shot it. I'm not dumb to guns in anyway but I always try to make sure of things before shooting any of them and just want to make sure I can use the ammo I bought...20g 2 3/4" Rifled Winchester Slugs(it is a 3" chamber)....Was gonna pick up some Buck shot and Bird/Target shot for it to and just need any advise from someone who has one on what I should be shooting from it.I don't want to hurt it in anyway as it means a lot to me just because it was my Dad's and I have always loved this gun but never got to shoot it.It's almost as old as I am.

It's probably extra-full choke, and you can shoot any 2 3/4" or 3" shells available, regardless of whether the shells have shot, buck-shot or slugs. Here's a useful link www.parkerguns.org/pages/faq/ChokeSize.htm from Parker Guns that shows chokes. Or, here's another: www.guncustomizing.com/tech.htm You probably already own an inexpensive (or expensive!) dial caliper; measure the bore diameter at the muzzle and compare to the chart. Mine measures .581". Assuming Savage bored 20 gauge barrels at the standard .615" (and I don't have the tools to measure mine), mine is right on the extra-full choke as noted in the charts. The best way to find out is to pattern your gun. There's lots of sites that tell you how to do so. I honestly don't care that much: mine goes bang, critters fall dead. Enjoy your 24!

Thank you very much for the info....I'm sure it will be very helpful...Will be looking it up asap.....And I'm kinda with ya on the bang dead critters,lol......Was told before I could use pretty much any slugs/shot in it from 3" to 2 3/4" but just wanted to make sure....I have a dial caliper some where just have to find it,Probably out in the garage some where.....We had a pretty good 4th of July here and hope you all did also.......Gonna be taking my oldest Gran-Daughter to the range to shoot her new Keystone Crickett(22LR,In pink, lol) she got for her birthday and figured I'd take this along and shoot a few rounds and just wanted to make sure I was good to go on the ammo I had......Also picked up a couple boxes of 22wmr for it to,Friggin hard to find now a days,Got lucky I guess.......Again Thank You Very Much for the info....I'm sure I'll have a bit of fun shooting my 24.......Looking up some slings & ammo holders for it right now.......Any suggestions on a good slip on recoil pad(don't want to put anything perm on it as I'd like to keep it natural like my Dad did).....

Cool........Still can't find mine.....Thinking I'll just take it when I go practicing with my G-Daughter and her K-C and see how it does.......Anyone one know of a GOOD recoil slip-on pad? Was gonna put on a permanent one but thinking I don't want to do anything perm to it,Rather keep it reg and just put a few things on it that are not perm,Like a slip-on sling....And maybe a clamp-on Bi-pod(anyone know of any,lol).....And thinking of picking up a ammo holder(butt stock)with cheek rest/bag so I can carry a few things with me when I go hunting.

I am looking for a slip on sling also. If I coulod figure out how to start a new string, I'd make that a topic.
