can you shooot a 41 magnum pistol cartridge from a 410 shotgun barrel? Think of the possibilities!

The Bore of a .410, is nominally .410 inch reducing at the muzzle depending on the Choke.
The Chamber is about .470 inch
A .41 Mag is about .434 inch
But the rim of a .410 is much larger than a .41 Mag so it would drop in the chamber, probably stopping inside maybe flush with the mouth. Likewise the .410 is not going to chamber in a .41 Mag chamber - even if length weren't a factor.

41 mag runs about 35,000 psi or MORE
Shotgun runs in the 10,000 psi range.
I would not do it.

We've talked about this before, I think; I can't fit a .45 Colt cartridge in my (1957 vintage) Mdl 24, but I can fit a 44 Special/Magnum cartridge. It fits nicely in the chamber and the rim is wide enough to not slide down. I've never owned a 444 Marlin, but since that cartridge is based on lengthening the 44 Mag (and the rim, base dimensions are almost identical), I assume one could fit a 444 Marlin into one's Mdl 24. Interesting....in bigcal50's video, I see they measured that shotgun's .410 choke at .387", which is identical to mine. And they failed to blow up that cheap import. I found this website recently; there are lots and lots of interesting links, including one on how to turn 303 British brass into an "easily reloadable .410." www.4-10.co.uk/However, I've always assumed that if I fired one of my 44 Special cartridges...even one with a soft lead bullet....that it would go bang and the .430" bullet would compress enough to go through my .387" choke. But I've seen slo-mo videos of various firearms being shot (I recollect one 30-06 Winchester barrel actually bending in an 'S' curve as the bullet passed through), and I'm concerned that the soldered joint on my Mdl 24 O/U barrel may break loose, thus leaving the two barrels flapping in the wind. So I've never tried. But....if someone brave/(foolish?) would try shooting a .44 Special, .44 Magnum or a .444 Marlin in a .410 shotgun barrel that's clamped (i.e., not soldered), I'd be interested. Take a video so we can all see. And if you do....Kelly.....can I have your 22 Hornet/20 gauge? Just leave it in a codicil in your will.

If you mean my 24 V 22 hornet barrel I'd be happy to Mike BUT if you're planning on using it on the 24 V-A I know you have it wont fire the rifle barrel

I have always thought that shooting one round of some other ammo in the wrong chamber,as long as the round would physically fit would probably not cause significant damage, but I can't bring myself to try and challenge the physics unless being attacked by an animal or personal defense.

I think the idea is very dangerous. Last year my grandson was with me at the range shooting his Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r rifle. A buddy gave him a baggy of ammo to shoot up. In the bag was a 30-30 round mixed with the Russian ammo. He didn't notice until he fired it. Thank God he had safety glasses on. The gun didn't burst but it leaked hot high pressure gas and unburned powder into his face. The powder penetrated his skin and left him with it embedded into his skin. He was done with shooting and promptly traded his rifle for a crossbow.
edit: as a side note, the yayhoos making this video had enough sense to not be holding the gun when shooting it.

I've loved this vid for a few years, the only problem I see is that if that 410 were shoulder fired, the recoil from a shoulder shot would be even greater than the resistance from the rest used in the video, and possibly producing more damage to the gun. (just a thought), let me know your thoughts.

I seem to recall someone was experimenting with high powered full brass .410 cases loaded with slugs, but I think the firearm was a custom bolt actioned firearm. Yes, it would be awesome using a centerfire pistol cartridge in the .410. I think Ace Dube still makes barrel sleeves in .22 Hornet for the .410. I asked about a .357 / .38 Special sleeve in .410 - he said he thought there wasn't enough steel around the cartridge for safety. Here is a link to his page for insert barrels for what its worth. www.mcace.com/shotguninserts.htmI know T/C Contender barrels are (were?) chambered in .45 LC / .410, but the barrel is chambered for the larger gauge, not the other way around.

"I seem to recall someone was experimenting with high powered full brass .410 cases loaded with slugs, but I think the firearm was a custom bolt action firearm."
Somewhere in the bowels of this forum is a treatise I wrote concerning the use of Russian .410 'cartridges' intended for the Saiga AK-47 clone. I bought said Saiga, along with a bunch of the ammo (in both shot and 'bullet', shot it a few times and then re-sold all except a few shotshells at an almost-embarrassingly high profit. The cases are made of some sort of zinc alloy, no paper nor plastic. Berdan primed.
Anyway, I concluded that their bullet, which is made of some sort of hard lead alloy, was too wide in diameter to risk shooting in my Mdl 24. I still have a few of the shotshells, but they seem to have more recoil than US .410 shells, so I've sort of tucked them into the back of my closet.

I think I remember those as well - Barnaul I think it was, they made Silver and Golden Bear ammunition I think. Here is a link to it and its use. www.fourten.org.uk/barnaul.html

Would love to....where do I find it?
The link offered by jrguerra references the ammo I have/had. Hmmm....my shotshells are marked '3'. Maybe I should pull them out and shoot them again.
Kelly, they might be perfect gator shot?!
