00 buck patterns pretty good out of mine out to 40 yds or so. Never tried on coyotes, just a couple nuisance raccoons and a skunk and possum around the house at fairly close range but it worked well on them.

Judging from your title, I am assuming you have an older savage 24, not a 24F.
I personally wouldn't use hevishot, or steel or anything other than lead shot, reasons being twofold. First, every older Savage 24 with a 20 gauge barrel other than the campers, were manufactured with a full choke barrel and most if not all shotgun/barrel manufacturers do not recommend shooting anything harder than lead through a full or extra full choke. They claim it patterns poorly and I'm sure it does, but I'm more inclined to think it will damage the barrel over time and they're simply not mentioning that. Secondly, since it may damage the barrel, you're not about to go to Savage, or Numrich, or anywhere else and be able to order a replacement barrel.
If it's legal where you hunt, I'd use a 2 & 3/4 inch shell for the 20 gauge with #3 buckshot(lead or copper plated lead) in that full choke barrel for predators. Buy a couple of different brands and pattern it, see what it likes.
A 2 & 3/4 inch 20 gauge shell holds 20 #3 buckshot pellets. They are .25 caliber and weigh 23 & 1/2 grains each. That gives you a dense enough pattern to kill them out to 45-50 yards, with enough energy, and reach(distance) and you won't pepper them with a load of holes at closer range if you are hunting for the fur.

Mine is a field grade 24 series s that I bought new in the late 80's.Has the release button on trigger guard.I have no desire to shoot steel shot for fear of damage to the barrel.Being a full choke gun ,should I stay away from slugs as well?

I wouldn't be scared to shoot slugs. My 24 has a modified choke but I have shot rifled slugs out of every 12 ga I ever owned with full choke and never had a problem.

Avoid Hevi-shot too as it is also very hard(hard as steel. If you are thinking about the dead coyote Hevi-shot loads have a gunsmith open the choke to modified.

I would agree with the Colonels assesment as I have shot slugs through full choke guns as well, and that includes Savage 24's and never had a problem. However I would only use the older style pure lead foster slugs, not the newer saboted slugs designed for rifled barrels. Somewhere around 2004 as I recall, there was someone on here who claimed to have some experience as a gunsmith and claimed that slugs fired through a full choke would damage the barrel and he had seen it many times, and that it didn't take a lot of shots for the damage to start happening. I asked for pics and he never produced them, I never did believe it anyways.

My model 24 shot well with slugs, I even won a slug match with it.
It has a peep sight which I adjusted to the slugs I was shooting.
That was only for the slug shoot, I keep the sights adjusted for a reduced load 222 the rest of the time. Shotgun patterns where it should.
If I was hunting with a shotgun, a repeater may be better.

I like 3" magnum 4's and 2 3/4" #2's if you can find any. When bigger is needed #4 Buck is good. I never need oo Buck on varmints.
But pattern them form your gun cause it don't matter what WE think if your gun doesn't pattern them well.
