After trying out about 10 different brands and types of .22LR ammo, I was surprised how different they are accuracy-wise. I had been buying Remington Wildcat (500 rounds), and Federal Champion Training (525 rounds) because I am cheap. The Federals were inconsistent and less accurate than most others (with the exception of CCI Clean .22LR). The Feds are high-velocity, CPHP and I have about 150 rounds or so left. Even though they are copper plated, they hang up in my Ruger's bolt action. They cycle, but I have to do it twice. No more giant boxes of ammo. They are good for shooting tin cans and metal targets with a semi-auto. Luckily I have a lot of LRN ammo left to try in the Savage 24S-D and Chiappa Double Badger. Maybe my vision isn't so bad after all. I was sighting them in with the Federal stuff. I am guessing the CCI Standard LRN ammo will work well in the combis. It was accurate, but had the same cycling issue as the Feds. I finally settled on CCI Mini Mag HV CPLRN for the Ruger. I thought it was hard to find (at the usual suspects), but Cabela's stocks it. Accurate, and cycles well in the Ruger American Rimfire Standard 8301. Other brands worked well too, but I bought 200 rounds thinking they were difficult to get. I also have a 100 round box of Remington Golden Bullets, so I am probably set for life.

Have you tried Remington 40 grn. Sub Sonics in it yet ? A couple of my .22s really like that load a lot. A 100 round box at Wal-Mart is about $6.53 last time I checked.

I have pretty much all the stuff I tried with the Ruger, including a 100rd box of Remington Golden Bullet 36gr. I have shot the Remington Wildcat stuff, but while good in a Ruger 10/22, it was unimpressive in the Savage 24S-D. But that could have been because I was shooting indoors at the time with fiber-optic sights (which light up outdoors, but not in a stall). I want to try the CCI Standard LRN stuff as it was very accurate, but didn't cycle well in the bolt action. That is not a problem in break action guns as you manually load each round. I don't think I'll buy any more ammo unless what I already have don't work well.

22 ammo is weird, isn't it?! I've had many .22 LR handguns and rifles, and each, rifles in particular, seem to do better with one vs. the others.
I had a Winchester Model 75 target rifle (Winchester's 'economy' model) that shot Remington's cheapest .22 ammo into tiny holes at 50 yds all day long. The same ammo makes lovely shotgun patterns in my Browning T-bolt. My Ruger does well with CCI and Winchester ammo, but not with Remington. And so on. You just have to try and try until you find an ammo that shoots in your gun.
Huh. There's my unnecessary advice for the day....

A buddy and I spent many hours at the range trying various 22 ammo for the best consistency (accuracy) with our bench rest CZ 452 American. Both rifles have been tuned to the extreme and will shoot 4 out 5 inside a nickle at 100 yds. We found the best bang for the buck is Federal 550 in the 50 round box. I have compared it to very expensive target ammo of various foreign brands and found it shoots right along with the 10-12 dollar a box ammo. I used to buy it by the brick and found one particular lot number was extremely accurate. Wish I had a case of it but alas it was all sold by the time I realized it was special.

Went to a 50 yard indoor range yesterday. Brought my 24S-D and a Marlin 795. I have put my Lyman's 53D on the S-D with an aperture and my front Williams Firesight and boresighted it. I put a Tech Sight TMS200 (Peep rear, post front) on the Marlin and boresighted it as well. At 25 yards I had really nice groups with both guns. I had to adjust the sights on both to get them on bull. The 53D was easy breezy to adjust, the Tech Sight was fairly easy. I moved them out to about 40 yards and had to tweak them both slightly as well. Peep sights are the bomb! I think I could reach out further, but the indoor lighting in the booth, coupled with the bulls looking awfully small at the back of the range. I park the targets where I can see there is overhead lighting. I am 66 years old and the beginning of cataracts, but the peeps really tighten up my shooting compared to open sights. Easy to put the front sight where you want it and center it in the aperture and squeeze off a shot. Perfect for squirrels and rabbits (just have to find some) after the leaves fall. For shooting in foliage, I have a scoped bolt action for squirrels. I shot CCI Standard LRP in the S-D; and Aguila Super Extra, CCI Mini-Mags, and Remington Golden Bullets in the 795, and they were all fine. Only CCI Mini-Mag Clean had a loose group and even they were acceptable. I bought a box of 500 Aguilas at the gun show for $20, so they will be my go-to for the 795. The others will be backup, unless they suddenly go on sale. I am sticking with the CCI Standards with the S-D. So nice, why shoot anything else? I had shot Aguila Interceptor LRP in the S-D and they were equals to the CCIs, but are harder to find.
