Acquired for myself a pretty decent 24 Series S .22 mag/20 gauge (trigger guard latch, E serial # prefix). This one didn’t look like it was used much, but the front sight doesn’t look right at all. I’m 99% certain that Savage didn’t use a front sight with two holes. Can anyone with a Series S confirm the correct front sight? If it’s not correct, which front sight is the correct one? I see that Numrich and Jack First have front sights, but the models can get a bit confusing.

It doesn't look like the radius on the bottom of the sight matches the top of the barrel. Probably not correct.

That is definitely an aftermarket front sight.

Well, I went out and purchased the listed front sight from Numrich. Looks really small and a bit low for the rear sight, but seems to have the proper curvature on the bottom to match the barrel contour. Here’s what it looks like—does this look like the correct one?

JimmyP, I have a Series S 22mag/20ga with a D prefix serial number. I do not know how to post photos, but I will try. Here is a photo of the front sight on it, which I believe to be original.

Well, that did not work.🤗

From what I see in your photos, yes, this is the correct sight. I checked three of mine, and they all measure an inch long with sort of a little shark's fin at the front. The sight you bought is plastic, I presume, since Numrich no long offers the metal sight . But the plastic ones look just like the metal originals, aside from being plastic, of course . I've bought and used several of the plastic ones from Numrich, and they fit just like the original metal ones.

Savage24--try using the standard website (not mobile). There's a lot more options for posting photos. Thanks for your help!

Thanks littleguns—I appreciate all of the help you can provide. Sometimes finding the correct schematics for all of the model variations can be real challenging!

I checked my savage 24 series S with an E serial number prefix and it has a similar front sight to the one pictured on your gun in the original post. Mine only has one screw though and not 2. Mine is also a .22/20ga and not a magnum.

Looks like the sight originally on the firearm was an aftermarket replacement. The correct one from gun parts corporation, www.gunpartscorp.com/products/107460A won’t fit mine anymore because the previous owner redrilled/retapped the sight hole to 6 x 48. I searched forever for a more suitable solution and I think I found one: www.gunpartscorp.com/products/533660This is a front sight for Savage 22 rifles so the radius curvature is pretty close, plus it has one hole for screw mount.

jimmyp, did some checking and your front sight depicted in the 4/2 photos match the one depicted in the schematic for the Savage 24SE in Jack First's Gun Parts for Rifles, part number 24-218, a part used on many of the 24 models.

Thanks neilrr. I agree, that is the correct front sight part. Do you know if that sight is drilled for a #3x48 screw hole? My front sight hole is a #6x48, which I believe that a previous owner drilled out/ retapped the original hole. I had purchased a replacement sight from Numrich/gun parts, but it was plastic and not conducive to expanding the hole size so it wouldn’t work. The metal one just might work with some modifications!

I would try to find an original sight and drill it out to the screw hole you have now if there's enough material. As a last resort there is always JB Weld.

jimmyp,
Per Brownell's Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms, Parts & Assembly, the 24 SE front sight screw, Savage part 24-288 is a slotted fillister screw with a pitch and gauge of: 3/32 x 50. If you want to use the plastic sight and screw you purchased from Numrich, you could plug the existing hole then drill and tap the plug for the screw that came with the replacement plastic front sight.

Even though it's two years ago, I'm puzzled by the barrel band on a Series S?
