A few weeks ago i walked into a LGS, and on the shelf there was an old Stevens 22/410. The finish was quite thin, but the wood looked solid. Side selector is intact, and of course no serial number because this was made probably 40 years before they were required. But i noticed no sights on it.....then the owner pointed out the ghost ring that had been inletted into the top of the receiver. i have a box of parts for various 24's (and Savage/Stevens 94's too) and knew i probably had several sets of sights. For about 200 it followed me home.....and i found a later model front sight with screw that is a lot larger than the early guns, which looks like it might be about the right height. The muzzle has also been counterbored about 3/8 of an inch, just past where the screw for the front sight is. Makes me wonder if those guns that were counterbored was because someone ran a hole into the bore. The sight is just a little long, hanging off the end of the barrel, but when i get time i'll grind that down. Not sure if i want to refinish it or just leave it as is. i'll probably just shoot it and see how close these sights are, because the rear sight cannot be adjusted, it is just dovetailed into a slot cut into the top of the receiver and peened into place. Now to see if i can get my wet rock working and grind down this front sight a bit to make it fit behind the muzzle........
