My 24H-DL 22WMR/20 has the very thin grooves for a scope mount. They look very similar to those on any old 22. I'm sure a Weaver mount would work but is there anything better that you've used?

As the above photo shows, you can mount a scope on it in different ways. The top gun in the photo is of my turkey gun chambered for 22 WMR on top and 3 inch 20 gage on bottom. It has a 1 power Vortex scope on it that is no longer made. I used the grooved top to mount the scope. A half dozen or more scope mount makers provide them and they are cheap. I use the steel ones rather than the aluminum ones, but that's just me. Use any search engine to find one. It has been a good mounting system and I have never had any issues with it in over half a century that I have owned that gun and mounted several different scopes on it using those same mounts. The bottom one is chambered for a 222 Remington on top and a 3 inch 20 gage on bottom. It has a "REDNECK" SEE-THRU mount that allows use of the iron sights if you choose. I don't remember where it came from. The Savage 24 was made to be a boy's first gun. As such it was simple, inexpensive, and usually subjected to abuse. The older ones with the barrel selector on the side got damaged so often that every gunsmith back in the 1950's and 60's had a half dozen or more slide barrel selectors always in stock. Broken stocks and sight damage were also common. Boys knock around a lot and their guns got knocked too. But since they are so simple, there isn't a lot to break and repairs can usually be made with a screw driver and a little common sense. You've got a classic gun in your Savage 24. It is as useful and darn near bullet proof as it has always been. Enjoy it and all the best to you.

pic sharingBTW, here is a photo of me and the top gun in the photo in the post above in action during turkey season last year. (2021) I had a 1 X 4 Leupold mounted on it then, but the 1 power Vortex gives me a bigger field of view and I only need a sighting point and not magnification. I'll camo the Vortex when I find my round-tu-it. Lost that dang thing some where around here. With these new tungsten shot shells, the 20 gage is now a 45 yard turkey killer although I limit my shots to 30 yards. I use the 22 WMR barrel to kill the coyotes that always sneak in when I am calling turkeys. I kill about as many of them as I do turkeys and some years, even more. Last year I killed two gobblers and three coyotes. Like I said, these little guns are still as useful as they ever were and any real hunter knows that. Note the non Savage trigger guard on that gun. The originals were some kind of plastic and I fell down a creek bank with it and broke the original guard. That is a stamped steel Numrich replacement guard on that gun. It looks funny, but works fine.

Wow! Thanks Ragnar. I figured the old Weavers would be the best but wanted some feedback. Your 'turkey' gun is just like mine, other than the camo, 22WMR/20. A 222 would be nice for those shy coyotes. Nice turkey (never seen a bad one) but why the frown? If I was out in the woods with a nice turkey, I'd be smiling! Alec

I hunt alone and use a self timer on my camera to take photos. It will only delay for 10 seconds and in that time I have to get back into position and try to see the little red blinking light on the camera to see if it took a photo of my back while I was trying to get into position. And then I discover that I cut my head off in the photo or got a picture of the sky or ground. It'sa pain in the wazoo. So I am usually concentrating on that red blinking light and don't think to smile. I think I am smiling here. Maybe. Nope. Must because I was using Ithica (TIKKA) 12 gage over 222 Remington gun that day. Once they started making the heavy shot shells for 20 gage, I have used the little Savage 24 exclusively for terkels. It is lighter and shorter that the Ithica gun and I have had it forever. It just FEELS right. HERE -->> www.ebay.com/p/1300559934is a link to scope mounts for grooved receivers. There are several others, so check'em all out first.

My 24 V is drilled and tapped for a #74 one piece Weaver mount. I got it from Midway, worked perfect.

I use turkey loads when hunting with my 12 ga but with the 24H-Dl which is 22 mag over 20, I use 2 3/4 #4 or 5 and get close!!

Thanks. So do you think it would be fine to shoot 3" magnum loads out of the 20 gauge? Mine is a 24v-a made in 1971.

If your receiver says 3" on it, you can shoot 3". The word magnum is of no consequence. It is used by ammunition manufacturers AND sometimes by gun makers as a marketing ploy to suggest their product is better. Note that there is some controversy over this point with some saying that magnum ammo is much stronger. There is no evidence that I have seen to support this. I suggest you ask Ragnar. He doesn't smile much but he sure knows the 24 and he shoots a lot of turkeys.

Hi, I just purchased my first 24 (Field Grade 22/20 with the barrel release on the front of the trigger guard) and new to this group. Great to be here!
I'm planning on mounting a scope on my 24 (it has the narrow dovetail grooves) and use the 20G slugs for deer.
I see in the photo above that it looks like the hammers have been modified with a "wing" added. Is this to make it easier to access/operate after the scope was mounted? If so, is that a custom mod, or can I purchase a replacement hammer?
Thanks!

Canada,
You can get a hammer extension. Williams and uncle mikes make them. You will need to get a width of the hammer spur and order one that will fit and lock up tight. They are not expensive. Lowman

When you test it, be ready for the scope to come off in recoil. I'm not saying 100% it will, but expect it to. (meaning don't shoot it standing up on concert or anything like that)
