Just bought a 24F that was supposedly never fired from a neighbor. Chambered in 22 hornet and 12 gauge. Been on my bucket list to buy one since I’m a predator hunter. My dad had a 22 WinMag 20 gauge when I was a kid in the 70s. He sold it for 60 bucks to put food on the table at the time. Always wanted one but never ran into the exact chambering. Thought they were cool guns and still are. I realize the modern 24F it’s far from what my dad had but couldn’t pass it out for $600. The neighbors also have the exact same 24F model in 22lr/20 gauge but it didn’t interest me. I looked at the link on the forum here… which is what got me to sign up to be a new member. The 24F trigger is definitely different than the one that is posted on how to lighten. It was close enough to figure out how to get it done. I didn’t want to pound out the pin to remove the hammer since it was under pressure from the main spring and didn’t wanna wreck anything. My buddy who is a Smith said I needed to after the fact. So I went through and popped out the lower pin that held in the trigger. I stoned and polished it seven or eight times and reassembled it for testing. I also was able to carefully take a eyeglass flathead screwdriver and wrap it with 400 grit sandpaper. I then worked the sear engagement on the hammer through the area where the trigger guard covered up. I also pulled my hammer back and I interred a wood dowel to keep the area exposed better for sanding and polishing. I then polished with a Dremel tool very carefully. It was like a game of operation. My old RCBS trigger scale bottoms out at 4 pounds. I got creative and tied a string to my hammer and on the opposite end I tied a couple of boxes of Sierra bullets adding weight along the way. With the last stoning and polishing it now brakes at a crisp 4 and a half pounds. Figured I’d leave it alone for now and call it good till I do some load testing. I also mounted a weaver 74 base. I borrowed an optic from sone of my other guns to try on it. A Bushnell Engage. It’s a 30 mm 1-4 German reticle with an illuminated red dot. Probably not the greatest scope to do some load testing with 100 yards. But figured it would make an excellent scope for both barrels providing they are regulated close enough. If not I’ve been on the warpath looking for 30 mm see-through mounts so I can use the scope for the 22 hornet in the open sites for the 12 gauge barrel. I’ve been looking high and low for iron sighter and quick site see-through 30 mm rings with no luck. so my question is has anybody got their triggers down lighter with success? I have stone in polished many of triggers and got them down to a pound or less. But those are in modern set ups. I don’t feel like looking for parts if I go too far. There still is plenty of “sear” shelf left on my trigger. Also it looks like there is some solder or something in between my barrels probably 6 inches away from the action. Is this something that was done under factory to regulate them or maybe the previous owner had it regulated? I’m also curious how tighter groups the 22 hornet shoot in these guns. From what I’ve read here the hornet configurations are the 4th rarest caliber? Like I said I’m sure it’s not as cool as the wood guns and it’s definitely not the quality as I can see and have seen. But for modern day predator hunting this is the option I would rather have because it has a threaded choked 12 gauge. I can stick any tube in it I want to get it to pattern at distance is way beyond what most would consider a shotgun can do. I have shot coyotes out to 65 yards with lead BB along with a .670 gobblin thunder tube in my beretta. I also shot a coyote at a 109yards with HD BB. Didn’t think it was that far I would’ve never pulled the trigger. It broke two legs with the shot! I did have to walk up and finish it off though. So,long story short, I figure if I can get the trigger light enough to make the gun accurate it should be a great fun predator calling tool. Anybody have any tips or suggestions on getting the trigger a little lighter? I was wondering about replacing the main spring. Wondering if I found a spare and cut a coil or two off and keep the original one just in case I didn’t get reliable ignition? I also found 420 22 WMR cases and was given a die set. I loaded up a few loads to try with 40 grain vmax and 40 grain Nosler ballistic tips I had in my inventory. I used Lil gun and H110 powders. I also load a few with trail boss to try along with 40 grain vmax. The case full to the bae of my bullet was 3.6 grains so I loaded a few with 3.2 grains and 3 grains of trail boss to try. Hopefully it’s closely regulated and a shooter to boot. If it’s not regulated I’ll put some see through scope rings on it.
