On my Model 24 DL 22/410: When I move the top snap lever to the right, nothing seems to engage and the action does not break open. The top Snap lever just swivels as if not engaging. Is it possible for me, an amateur to fix this or should the gun be taken to a gunsmith?

take the stock off that will let you see what's happening and then you can decide if you need a smith

Yes, I'd bet you can fix it. But first, what happens when you move the lever to the left? Same thing? If so possibly the top snap screw has worked loose. Take a look at this diagram: www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/SavageStevensSpringfieldFox-33479/RifleShotgunCombinations-40501/24CSeriesP-38478.htmThis is not your exact gun but the top snap mechanism is identical so look at that area, and part #13 is what I'm talking about. So then if you can remove the butt stock you should be able to see if that is the problem, if not keep looking around in that area, the top snap assembly to the locking bolt assembly.

ee, You were exactly correct. A little hard to tighten that screw, but got 'er done. Works like a champ! Thank you so much. The diagram was very helpful. I am passing my little Savage 24 on to my granddaughter, but she was not too impressed when it would not break open. It is my hope that she will use it, to instruct my great grandkids.

Happy to help! Maybe you can use this incident to show your granddaughter that the 24 is easy to work on, let her and the kids get inside of it.
