Why is it that I can't seem to find any info on my 24V especially in that caliber? I found it in the Savage 1979 catalog and thats about it. I've seen a nickle plated one sell for like $1300. That's pretty damn steep I think. A shop owner told me that if he had it his shop he'd sell it for $600 firm. Does that seem like a reasonable price to anyone? If anyone has info about anything please let me know.

I'm new to the Savage 24 venue. You would think that with as many followers out there that you could find manufacture dating info, history, production quantities etc. How rare is the .357/20 anyway? I sure havent seen or heard much about them.

The 357 would be the second rarest of the "common" ones. The 357Max being the least common. I wrote it that way because there are some calibers out there that may be only handful of, prototype R&D guns etc.
There isn't much out there about them, which is the whole point of this site…. with as little info that's here. There's no good way to date them, with the possible exception of paying the Savage historian and waiting a while. What actual information that gets you I couldn't say.

What about the 30/30 Akley Improved over 20 ga? Assuming it's factory work, that would definitely be in the latter category. I really wish I kept track of all the "maybes" and second hand "I saw one in…"s over the years, because I don't remember them all.

Not factory..I was thinking I may change mine.. ;D If I had a 30-30/20Ga I think I would just try some of the new Hornady 30-30 LEVERevolution ammo. Not that far off from the Ackley Improved ballistics and it would save the conversion cost and wouldn't destroy the value of the gun. www.hornady.com/store/30-30-Win-160-gr-FTX-LEVERevolution/SC

I've a Marlin lever in 30/30, a contender in 30/30AI ,and have used the Leverevolution ammo, and have some of the Leverevolution powder for reloading...
Not sure if it would "destroy" the value of the gun, and not sure if I'm too concerned about it..bought the gun to shoot, not collect.

How much are you gaining by going AI? The 24's not exactly a long range rifle so I don't see "flatness" coming into it, and I doubt any targets or critters you hit with it will notice the difference between the two.

Just for grins, if you reload the 24 30 30 is easy to load up to hotter loads. no tubular magazine to worry about accidental dischare in the mag. James

In the 30-30, load 150 grain spire points over some 748 or other powder. Use Contender data. This is the best load that I have found.
I believe that there have been lots of 24's custom reamed to all sorts of calibers. I have never seen a 357 max, but I know that the 357/20's are worth a small fortune.

I was lucky enough to find a "like new" 24V .357/20 ga. locally back in October for 475 with a Tasco scope and see through rings. I looked for years for that gun and finally found it in a local weekly ad rag. A friend in Texas has it now, (here goes the heresy) cutting it to 18.5 inches, reaming it to Maximum and threading it for choke tubes. It should be home this week. He has the same gun, modified the same way. Guys will say "Why'd you do that to that nice gun." He says "Shoot it". They do and then understand. It's a heck of a nice home defense, truck and carry gun.
