Hello, this is my first time here. I bought my model 24S-E from Playworld back in 1972. It’s the best varmit gun I ever owned. I have seen other models where they moved the beak away lever from the side to the top. I like mine on the side. My question to this forum is can I shoot slugs with this gun. I think it’s a full choke since I am able to hit my prey from about 40 yards with a tight pattern. I read horror stories of other guns splitting the barrel when using slugs. I have a new box of slugs but are afraid to test fire one. This Savage has a very thick barrel but will it be safe to shoot a slug? The slugs I bought are from BPS (best performance shot shell).

The choke on your .410 probably (possibly?) measures .375". It's easy to mic it, and you should know it anyway.
BPS' website doesn't show what kind of slug they're selling. You may have to sacrifice a shell with a box cutter to see.
If it's the old style Foster slug, you're good to go. Those often have a hollow base as well as fins that compress, all of which mean less stress on the barrel. Some sabot slugs also have enough compression built in to reduce the circumference adequately. Eschew all jacketed slugs.
Always measure first!

Vanmike's advice is sound and should be followed. I've heard the Russian Barnaul .410 slugs are extremely hard and should only be fired in cylinder bore barrels.
Welcome to the forum !
