On my .22 mag/20ga, I have used a red dot system for several years. The specific one that I use has 3 vertical red dots, as a reticle choice. This works wonderfully as I have my 22mag sighted to the top dot and the 20ga shoots perfectly to the bottom dot... I love the setup but I want to explore other rear sight options.. So..
I just ordered a Williams 5D 22/410 (receiver mounted peep sight). My question to those who use this sight on their 24's: What is the sight picture like, when aiming the shotgun? Are you able to look over the peep sight and look down the barrel, for shotgun aiming? It certainly seems like it will sit low enough to still look OVER the peep and down the barrel but i know several people use a receiver mounted peep sight and I was curious how that works with the shotgun portion of our double guns. For shooting things on the wing I feel like the small peep would slow down target acquisition, so I can imagine myself just looking down the barrel. I could be wrong (I have little to no experience using peep sights). Thanks, in advance!

Hmmmm WIlliams just told me today they don't make a sight for a Model 24, but they did decades ago. They further said there was nobody left who knew how to make one, no drawings, etc. A 22/410 was my second purchase, manymany moons ago when I was 12 or so. I paid the guy to mount a Lyman 53D sight, and it suddenly became super accurate, and still is. for instinctive (wing) shooting, at least for me, my eye is on the quarry, not on the barrrel. In my experrience the sight makes absolutely no difference in instinctive shooting. I rolled running rabbits every time, in the days there were no coyotes in that part of the country.
In a different group, over there we'd tell you the 24 is junk, and the sight is junk, and we'd take it off your hands for $25 or $50. (A running joke, because we are all jealous of what you have)
I'd like to see a picture of the receipt from Williams, so I can order whatever you have. (redacted is ok). I need a good peep sight to put on one for #1 grandson.
Seriously, the 24 is the best critter gitter to put food on the table or eliminate varmints there over was. I am very wary of people with very expensive gear and garments out to hunt. I could always out hunt them with a beat up old 24 and everyday clothes. With the peep sight it is a serious iron sight contender until you get in to iron that sells for over $1000 with fancy adjustable stocks and such.
I still recommend it to introduce newbies to chooting. Simple, near indestructable, and accurate, with a peep sight.

Thanks for the replies! And I guess I should clarify: I've been plundering Ebay for a long time trying to find one for a reasonable price. I found it on Ebay for $40 a couple weeks ago. It's ancient and not new from factory but it is in perfect condition. I have a gunsmith drilling/tapping my 22wmr/20ga and fitting it, now. Looking forward to trying it out!
I agree with the instinctive shooting statement. I figure when I'm making quick shots, wing shots, or running shots I wont notice the sights. I was just curious how the sight picture would be for aimed shots with the shotgun (since my particular gun shoots the shotgun about 6 inches low at 30 paces). It's my turkey gun and I do want to figure out how to aim both barrels with it.
"In a different group, over there we'd tell you the 24 is junk, and the sight is junk, and we'd take it off your hands for $25 or $50. (A running joke, because we are all jealous of what you have)" Oh trust me I know. I love these guns haha. My white whale right now, is a 357mag/20ga. My 22wmr/20ga is my very first one and my favorite squirrel/turkey/varmint gun.
"I'd like to see a picture of the receipt from Williams, so I can order whatever you have. (redacted is ok). I need a good peep sight to put on one for #1 grandson." I have been checking ebay for a long while now and I've missed several good deals on them. But I would definitely suggest checking ebay from time to time. They do appear from time to time.

If anyone else is like I am and on the fence about trying one.. I'll update the thread with my experience with it!
Attached picture is the one I got.
