On the FAQ page you'll notice that the Savage date code stamps run from 1949 to 1970 based on Schwing's work. The Gun Control Act of 1968 which took effect in October of that year is when serial numbers became mandatory and Savage started putting them on Model 24 guns.
My question is, does anyone have a gun that has both the date code stamp (from 1968,1969, or 1970) and a serial number? These would be the 24J-DL black receiver version, 24S-E, 24V-A, or 24D Series M. I know the very first guns to have serial numbers were the 24J-DL chrome receiver guns and did have stamps. But I'm unsure if they continued the stamps after serial numbers were the standard.
So check you guns if you would folks and let me know. Thanks!

I'm having the same issue. I'm trying to date my dads savage model 24; .22lr over .410 made in chicopee falls, side selector, with a date code 4B, however it also has a patent #. What would be your guess as to the actual year it was manufactured and why the contradiction? Also have a .22lr over .20 gauge marked 55v on one side of the .20 gauge barrel and 57v on the other.....

bbask,
Savage took over production of the Stevens Model 22-410 in around 1949 and renamed the gun the Model 24. It first appears in the 1950 catalog. Those first few years Savage retained the patent number stamped on the guns. I don't have my notes with me, but those guns marked Model 24 with the patent number underneath were from 1950 through 1953 or 1954. The mark of "4B" you indicated would make your gun produced in 1950. There really is no contradiction here because the serial numbers (not patent number) didn't come along until well after this gun was produced.
Your other gun marked with 55v and 57v would make it a 1968. The numbers 55 and 57 refer to different inspectors. The "v" is the actual date code of 1968.

Odell, is there reference serial number lists that applies to various models, so as to determining the date of manufacture?

It has a serial number starting with A7755XX. It also has some unusual markings on the barrel, near and just forward of the pivot lug...there is a large letter G and it has what appears to be an A beside a double struck letter. It appears there was a D that was over struck with either a J or an I. Under this is the number 34. On the side of the barrel chamber is a half of an oval, that appears to possibly have a half struck I2. This gun is in excellent condition and has the jumping fox on one side of the receiver, and the flying turkey on the other. It has the stock to receiver half moon scollops. The barrel selector is on the hammer. The breech lock lever is behind the hammer. It almost looks like a safe queen. Lucky find for me.

grape357 - The SP mark is likely a stamp from a completed manufacturing process and not a date of manufacture identifier. As far as it being a 24 V/F transition model, I can unequivocally say it isn't. The V/F transitions are a product of the late 80's early 90's at the end of the 24V Series D line and the begining of the 24F line. The 24V guns went in order: 24V, 24V-A, 24V Series B, 24V Series C, 24V Series D. The V/F Transitions are a mix of 24V and 24F parts or just 24F parts, but all are marked 24V with no Series identifier and typically are .30-30 over 20 and a few .223 over 20.
sidewinder - I'm working on a comprehensive listing of serial number by year, but it is slow going. If my book on these guns will be worth it for anything, it'll be this information.

Odell, I'm curious about the time frame of serial numbers actually appearing on these guns. I know the GCA of 1968 was signed into law on 10-22-68, but there had to of been a grace period before mandatory compliance became effective by penalty. Did you ever get more info?
In what year/years were the 24S-D produced?
Thx, David

My .22 WMR/20 Ga has serial number C180349. It is also marked Series P and both barrels are stamped 6SP. I need some help with this gun and can't find a match with any of the data I have so far found. The 24 inch barrels are joined only for about the first 6 inches from the breech. The receiver appears to be case hardened. There are two grooves cut into the rifle barrel that take a picatinny/weaver rail.
I bought this gun around 1980 and never had an opportunity to fire it. Just took it out of storage to clean and sight-in when I discovered the rifle barrel is slightly loose at the muzzle clamp. This needs to be fixed since I plan to use it (finally) in the next few months.
Any information that will help me track down a users manual will certainly help. I can't find a safety and have no idea if there is a hammer block, transfer bar, or what ever.
Sure would like to use this. Any help or suggestions welcome.
Thanks Jack
