I never could get my other .22/20 regulated quite right, and being a cyl bore 24C, it wasn't useful at any kind of realistic range...
But I finally got a chance to give the "new" 24S-C a good workout.
Shot some clays with my sister & my ol' dad. Poof, poof, poof, poof, they went. The ol' 24C just couldn't reach out that far with the cyl bore. This one is far more "usable" as a shotgun.
Then lined up some 2"-ish scraps of clays on the fence posts and went after them with the .22 at about 25yd kneeling position. Knocked 'em all apart like a champ.
At 25yd on the paper, shot pattern perfectly centered with the .22 POI, and the 5/8oz slugs about 1" low. .22 grouped all in 1" at 25yd and in 1.5" at 50yd, with the irons, which is probably all the better I can shoot irons. Excellent. The 24C groups the slugs a little tighter with it's cyl bore, but still regulated about 4" low even after wedging the barrels as much as seemed ok. This S-C doesn't kick near as nasty as the 24C either.
And it doesn't seem to walk up the paper as the rifle barrel heats up. Probably because of the soldered barrels.
It's significantly heavier than the 24C, though. And not as handy to get pointed out the truck window (hypothetically, of course).
The guy at the Friendly Local Independent Gun Store was asking $400 for it. I was going to try to talk him down to $300 or so, seeing as how the fit of the wood isn't quite proper, the furniture is a little dinged up, there was a little smattering of surface rust here and there, and the sights are aftermarket (had none on it when I first started negotiating, but he put some on). But I only got him down to $350, so I was planning to pass....
But after seeing how well regulated it is, I paid him his full $400 price tag and took it home.
Now if I can just figure out how to get to the insides to make sure it's all good and de-rusted in there. I cain't figure out how to strip the thing and get in there and still be able to get it back together (see post at savage24forum.boards.net/thread/390/model-24s-trigger-group-removal ).
Any ideas? I'm deathly afeer'd of messing something up, trying to go in there without some advice on the best way to go about it...
