Howdy all! I recently discovered this forum while doing research. I grew up shooting my father's 22LR/20 ga until he sold it (bad day). I recently have searched for a .410 version do that I could use it as a crow/squirrel/woodchuck tool.
Anyway, I recently came across a Model 24 S-E in 22LR/.410 that I could trade my somewhat derided Remington 7600 carbine for (which I value at $400-450) The gun appears to be in decent shape but the stock has a few dings.
Is this a decent deal? Are there things that I should look out for? Does this model have an aluminum or steel receiver? Overall quality?

I'm not a value expert but I just bought a 24S-E 22/20ga real nice shape for $425 a month ago. It has a steel receiver. Light firing pin strikes, poor regulation between barrels are things that can occur in these that I know of. They were inexpensive guns in the day, so quality was not up to some standards but they are nicer than some of todays guns. If I had a 7600 in the safe bringing me no pleasure anymore and wanted to try out a 24S-E like my dad had, I wouldn't hesitate.

Thanks for the info. My pops had one that was case hardened, and I would prefer a 20 GA out of utility. I'm okay with a .410 but I can foresee myself starting a small collection of 24s!

Next question...is an S-E in 22/.410 in decent but not perfect shape worth $450? I'm located in NE MD.

Probably not but if you want one bad enough and that's the best price you can find ... . I came across a .223/20 at a gun show going for $550. I couldn't/wouldn't justify that kind of money but I really wanted it. I had an extra .22mag/20 that the seller wouldn't take in trade. I waited until the last 10 minutes of the gun show and suddenly he was agreeable to the deal. We both went home happy.

I've recently come across a few different 24's recently:
a mint 22MAG/20GA (soldered barrels) at a PA gun show for $675
a very good 22LR/20GA (separated barrels) at the same show for $475
a good condition 22MAG/20GA with soldered barrels but no butt plate that had no price yet. The dealer wouldn't quote me until the plate came in, but i'll guess it's probably going to be $500.
