First of all, Hello. I am new here and new to the model 24. I have been watching for one for quite a while and this past weekend I found a model 24 s-e in pretty good shape for a real nice price. Both barrels group well and no mechanical issues. The only problem I have is the sights are too small for me to see well. I want a front bead and a peep sight. I took the gun to my gunsmith tonight and he said I am stuck with the front sight that came with the gun. It is a ramp sight/blade that is held to the barrel with a #3 screw. He said the barrel isn't thick enough to put a dove tail in it and he said the #3 screw is too fragile to mess with. It would be very easy to strip out the threads. We talked about brazing on a front sight but he was afraid the heat would ruin the weld between the two barrels and ruin the gun. Basically he didn't want anything to do with it. What are your thoughts on it? Thanks, Chad

Chad, My thought is first find another gunsmith. There are a lot of front sight ramps out there that can be put on your gun without brazing.Or machining a slot in your barrel, some attach with one screw, and I have see some that can be attached with loctite. Check www.marblearms.com/ or Skinner Sights,or www.Tech-SIGHTS.com. I am going to use a TS157 .920 Barrel Dovetail Adaptor for Ruger 10/22 which I am modifying to fit my 24V just to name a few. A good gunsmith can find something that would work and a lot of these you can do yourself. Good Luck and let us know if you find anything suitable.

Thanks for the response txbob. I'm going to meet with another gunsmith in a few days to pick his brain. Chad

I completely agree with Bob. I have installed many stiles slightly unorthodoxy (is that a word?) and they work perfectly!!
Shorty ramps from Williams come in many "flavors' and can even be adapted. That tiny screw on some front sites can be a problem but who in there right mind would even consider attempting to re use it??? CW

If you've got a front ramp/base, a smith should be able to mill off the blade, then dovetail the base/ramp for something else. As you found out though, the local gun fixer and parts changer might not want to mess with it.
