NO it can't be done 30-30 chamber is larger than 357 to begin with and the barrel bore on a 357 is larger than 30-30

A barrel replacement might not be out of the question, but would probably be more costly than just buying the gun you want...
There ARE some 30 cal rounds you could rechamber the 30-30 to. The easiest would be the Ackley improved round, but if you do a little research you can find more. Just be sure to keep chamber pressures and barrel wall thickness in mind so you don't end up with an explosive combination.

To reiterate what's already been said, Wikipedia is your friend on questions like this. Here are the respective links for the two cartridges: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-30_Winchesteren.wikipedia.org/wiki/.357_MagnumLook over to the right side of the page to the specifications of each cartridge. The 30-30 base diameter (.422") of the cartridge is almost as big as the rim diameter (.440") of the .357 Mag. You'll notice all of the other dimensions are pretty incompatible. I guess, if you really want a short cartridge from that barrel, you could take the barrel off, re-chamber it for .30 Herrett, then re-cut the extraction cut, re-build the extractor, including springs, etc. Then, get forming dies, re-form 30-30 brass to .30 Herrett. It's about a 5-stage process. Maybe as long as you're at it, you could re-bore the barrel to .35 caliber. Then re-form the 30-30 brass to .35 Herrett. Naw.....

MMmm… you still have the same problem you do with the 357. The factory 30-30 chamber is already longer than the 30 Herrett.

That's correct, the 30 Herrett round are OUT they are shorter than the 30-30 chambers. The 357 Herrett may also be out, I would need to look closely to see if the 35 rebore would take enough of the 30-30 chamber out. But I'm thinking that it too would be a no go.
Also correct, reboring to 35 and re chambering to the 35/30 round. IMHO the advantage is not worth the cost and I am a STOUT 35cal supporter!
What are you looking to accomplish? Do you just want a 357 or need lower performance levels? I too would love a 357 savage 24. Closest I have is a 30-30 and I was going to get a chamber adaptor but decided on light loads for small game using lead bullets and bulky powders like XMP 5744 & Trail Boss. Many like tiny charges of fast powders for ''mouse fart'' loads. These are quite quiet and useful for close range hunting small critters. The vel of my loadings should be 1400-1500 fps with a 180g lead bullet.
This may be a option for you... Until we BOTH can find a 357/20ga that is.

Thanks all for the replies. I think the 30-30 is a good fit for the 24 but I just want a 24 in 357 to go with a couple of revolvers that I have. Vick

Guys, I wouldn't give up entirely on finding a .357/20 ga. Granted, I've wanted one for about ten years to go with my Blackhawk, but never seriously searched for one. A year or so ago mine came up for sale in a local ad. I paid 475 for it in excellent condition.

I should have been more clear....the reason you have to remove the barrel and do all that extractor stuff is because you do have to cut the barrel at the chamber end. My point is....it's a pretty arduous and usless thing to contemplate!

There are several barrel insert makers if that helps bridge a gap.
