This project will probably take me a while to complete. I got a stock for a Savage 94 because I didn't want a monte carlo comb. Prices seemed to vary wildly from one source to another, and why the hell would I want to pay a lot of money for a stock that wouldn't exactly fit my gun anyhow?! Better wood, maybe? I got this set from Brownells for about $75. Apparently it's walnut, and has an oil of some sort on it. That'll have to come off, I assume, so it's all evenly colored after I sand it and finish it? I bought Birchwood Casey stain, finish, and wax. The front edge needs to be shaped properly to fit the receiver. It's rounded where it should be squared, and squared where it needs to be angled. The meatiest part of the buttstock will be thinned down some (it's pretty darn fat), and the forend will need inletted some more to fit my 20ga barrel. Not sure yet whether I'll drill some more holes in the butt for storage or not. Maybe once I jump in and become more comfortable with the project. Then the whole staining/ finishing thing, which I'll have to do some YouTube "research" on. I'll probably replace the buttpad with a rubber one. Not so much for kick relief as for having some no-slip grip on my shoulder. I tend to shoot this gun a lot while wearing a backpack, and those shoulder straps tend to be slick. Can you tell I've never done a stock before? The whole job makes me nervous, but I really would like to accomplish the task myself. Here are some rather humongous pics that compare the two.

NICE project!!!
I only use the BC TRU-OIL and it works very good. Apply with your hands and allow to hang dry in as duct free area as you have. After couple three coats take most off with steel wool then repeat. Recently I have been using surgical gloves and I like the results!
GOOD LUCK and PLEASE post regular pics!

Tru-Oil is good, so are the various tung oils or even boiled linseed oils. Here's a useful article similar to one that I read years ago and is now on the internet machine: www.finewoodworking.com/toolguide/articles/selecting-a-finish.aspxFWIW, I refinished my 1968-vintage Mdl 24 soon after I bought it (I shaved off the pistol grip and 'converted' it to a straight stock) and finished it with boiled linseed oil. Some, what 50+ years later, it still looks great. But you do need to start with a nice piece of walnut. Yours looks like just the ticket.

My experience with these almost-ready-to-install stocks (I have six or eight of them) is that the 95% claim is a bit optimistic. As you note, they're kind of fat and do take some work to get just right. Just be sure you take off excess wood a tiny shave at a time. It's a lot easier to take off more as needed than to add back if you take off too much. (DAMHIKT.)

Thanks guys. I feel like I'm about halfway done with the fitting process. I'm trying very hard not to farm this one out to a qualified woodworker. I'll try and get some photos up this evening. And littleguns... I may very well be a damn hick, but at least I know how to spell it!

And littleguns... I may very well be a damn hick, but at least I know how to spell it! I'm not sure if you're serious about your comment quoted here. Rest assured it had nothing to do with anyone being or not being a hick, because DAMHIKT doesn't mean "damn hick." It's what I consider common Internet discussion-board lingo for "Don't Ask Me How I Know This." In other words, my comment about taking off wood slowly rather than having to add it back later comes from my own experience of sometimes having removed too much and having to carefully add slivers back. It was an admission of my own occasional less-than-perfect work, not some sort of comment about you.

Ha! Just a joke, man. I didn't know what the acronym stood for, but I knew it wasn't what I wrote. And I really do appreciate the advise.
