Yesterday, I had some down time stuck waiting for a call. So, I decided to fix the wrong angle cut on my 24V butt and shorten and install a rifle pad on my 24DL stock.
First the 24V;
I wrapped the stock in painters tape to help reduce chip out and installed a new 120 tooth finish blade in my chop saw.
Then I attached a Marlin rifle pad to the butt and wrapped the entire thing up in painters tape to protect it during the pad fitting. I have a jig to grind the pad. But lent it to a friend, so I did this the old fationed way... CAREFULLY by hand on the butt!!
The Marlin pad was very close to correct for the Savage so the fitting was quick and easy. Basically you carefully grind off pad material until you remove one layer of tape. Stop and remove tape and replace that tape with thin scotch tape and begin with a file. That's the slow part.
Here it is all done.
On to the 24DL butt stock, continued on part II

Part II. The 24DL stock was just too long for me. ESPECIALLY in winter with heavy clothing. Again wrap entire stock on blue painters tape for protection. Mark and cut butt. Then attach pad and grind to shape. This is a Pachmayer SMALL pad!!! Almost there... Finally done... this one took a while too... a lot of material to remove. CW

Very nice job, Like to see a craftsman's work. Thanks for posting the pictures it helped me make up mind which color of pad I will put on mine. I have a N.O.S. Browning brown pad,I was trying to decide to go with the brown or get a black one,I think I will go with the brown one.

Nice job, looks better than mine. I initially did a perfect installation on my 2 24's but then decided I should shorten the stocks by 3/4". Once I cut the stocks off the recoil pads (Pachmyer white line) no longer fit. The stocks actually get a smaller as they taper to the butt plate so now the recoil pads are too small by maybe 1/16". So off to the gs to get new recoil pads. By the time I had done the second one I had run out of patience and got a little careless. Didn't get as nice a fit as the first time. But what the heck they are hunting guns.

Very well done and documented, practically a "how to". Thanks.

Super nice job! Very informative on the "how to"/procedure to get the job done(could be used on any gun for that matter). 1st one looks just like the back end of my marlin i did many years ago,but on that one i used a file all the way. I think i would grow impatient having the tools i have now to do some jobs. Again really nice job man. Keep up all the how to posts.I love'em. Can never have enough knowledge when it comes to guns.
