I knocked my scope off several years ago trying to remove a spent .223 wolf steel cartridge. My gun will not eject any steel cartridges.
It had a weaver rail mounted by the 3 holes. The holes are the smaller size 6-48 and I have been looking to use the larger 8-40. Brownells sells an oversized 6-48 kit but it's expensive. I recently purchased an old Ironsighter mount for the 24F but it's a 2 piece mount. I haven't removed it from the package in case I need to sell it. Because I'm not sure if I have to drill new holes or not. Now I came across and old Pacmyer swing over mount for the 24 that I'm not sure I will use either. Any suggestions on which would be the best? I'm sure the 8-40 screws would be my choice but I have to get a bottom tap.
It seems the metal isn't very hard and is why the screws pulled out when I hit the side of the rifle with my hand as I laid it over my legs. Accidentally hitting the scope from the side. I felt pretty dumb and was very upset at doing so.
I liked having the scope on it. The .223 is super accurate.

I'd suggest getting a 10-32NF tap (bottom stlye)/drill bit set from a hardware store--then you can get new screws cheaply I've done this on my 24's

I bought the screws and tap from brownells to attach kwik site 2-peice see thurs to the v-d 222 I used to have. I didn't drill the holes but simply reamed out the old holes slowly with the tap. Among other things, I used a bench grinder to grind my screw lengths to size. I had to be real patient and work on te threads when lining the threads up, due to rough edge on the screws from grinding. I did have to widen the holes in the mounts just a bit. It worked like a charm but the screw heads didn't sit flush down in the holes well and it would have looked nicer had the screws sat flush. But it did hold rock solid.

So unless they make scope mounting screws of that size then I'm out.
And if they do, then I probably already have that size drill and tap. Actually, I'm sure I do. But I'm not familiar with anything other than in my post.
I liked the Weaver rail with Bausch and Lomb 2-7x32 scope that came with it. Not sure I would like the side swing or see thru mounts. Thought I'd give it a go over before I made a solid decision.
Thanks for help and info.

I received the Savage 24DL Flip over Side mount. It's pretty nice but still not sure I will use it or the See Thru mounts. The Weaver Rail mount looks Classy. I haven't had much time to go over it all but bigger screws will probably be what I do. Wish I could just use longer screws instead.

I would suggest your first choice hands down over a 32 thread pitch!! These holes are VERY shallow, the 32 TP is not at all applicable. The 40 TP is a FAR better choice. The #8 isn't going to do much for you, as its shallow and the screws are not the weak point the threads are...
Be careful, you wont get another chance to do this... if your not a machinist, I suggest having the job done by someone who is.
