So I just purchased a 22/410 off via Gun broker so... crap shoot it needs a lot of tlc. Just for starters the stock is loose. It isn't sloppy left or right just up and down. it was buolt in 1959 and has the Tenite stock that I want to convert to wood but for now I just want to shoot it.Soni figured just tighten it up. Ummm hmmm. The butt of the stock is one solid piece of Tenite with no seam ( ). It has a quarter size flat head screw that does nothing when you turn it.... So How do I tighten the stock or remove it?? And will any of the wooden stocks available just replace the Tenite?

Havent seen one but figured it was like all the rest you just remove the butt plate and use a long large screwdriver to loosen or tighen the bolt deep down in the large hole in the butt stock. if that is the screw you are talking about then it sounds as if it has stripped out. you could probably get by using a two man method or even three. as you will need to pull the stock and fram away from each other to get the remaining threads to engage the reciever and come on out. You will need a new bolt when you re instal a stock and youll want to get the right size tap to chase out the reciever threads.
I could be wrong and there will likely be others along soon to give their opinions on this
Got to thinking (yes I know that can be dangerous for me) about how I would deal with your situation without help on hand. I would probably tie paracord around the barrel pivot pin (barrel off of course) and make a stirrup for my foot to go in then standing in the stirrup pull up with all the force I could muster while turning the screw (counter clockwise of course) I hope that works for you as all the other "fixes" require cutting of the stock and it would be a shame to have to cut an old original tennite as I understand they are very rare nowadays.

That quarter-sized plug in the buttplate has to come out to get at the screw that holds the stock to the receiver. Although the stock screw itself is a bit different for Tenite vs. wood, it works the same -- tighten it up to tighten the stock. If the big plug does nothing when you turn it, it probably has stripped threads in the Tenite. I'm not sure how to advise getting it out if the Tenite is stripped. You might have to drill a small hole in it to somehow get a hook of some kind in it to give you some pulling pressure as you try to turn it counterclockwise; that might let the big plug grab any remaining threads. Or maybe epoxy something to it to grab onto as you try to add pulling pressure as you try to turn it out. If you get the big plug out, you'll have access to the regular type of long screw that holds most single-shot stocks on guns. I've found those stock bolts, as they're called, usually come loose fairly easily with a large enough screwdriver. If you get to it and find it won't turn, find a way to run some penetrating oil down into the stock to try to break loose any rust. The butt plate on the Tenite stock won't come off -- it is permanently attached to the Tenite unless you saw it off (which I would never advise); that's why you see no seam. I assume your gun is marked as a "Stevens Model .22-.410." If so, your gun couldn't have been made in 1959, because the 24s as of 1950 were "Savage Model 24" in various configurations. The Tenite guns were about 1939 or '40 to '48 or '49 (experts differ on exact dates, but never into the 1950s). Good luck with it; you got it at a decent price if it's the one I'm thinking of.

aha learned somthing. Glad someone with real knowledge of the tenite stocks came along everything is much clearer now. File that info back in the back of my brain where hopefully I"ll find it again if I ever get a tenite stocked savage.

I came across this old thread and thought I'd offer some updated 411 for those who may need similar advise today. The Savage/Stevens 24 tenite stock plug is indeed threaded. If it's stuck, first try soaking it with CLP or similar for a few hours and then try to unscrew it. You can "Tap" on the screw driver handle while turning counter clockwise to break loose any rust. If that doesnt' work, clean off all the oil and wipe with solvent. Applying some heat with a hair drier can be super helpful. Keep at it until it breaks loose. Eventually, you will succeed. Further, if you're contemplating changing the tenite stock to wood, Boyds has a great selection for the model 24. NOTE: the stock retaining bolt/screw will have to be replaced. IT IS NOT 1/4-20 as some have mentioned!!! it is a #10 machine screw (or at least mine is). Good luck and better shooting!
