Recently upgraded to a ghost ring rear sight. Boy, do I love it! My hit percentage went WAY up. Like 300%. It's surprising how your brain works to put the top of that front post in the center of the ring. It's a Williams WDOS base, and ghost ring insert. It took some work with a triangle file to make it fit. The 3 screws shown in this pic are (L to R) attachment screw (locks it to barrel), elevation screw, & windage screw Same length as original. When adjusted high enough to align POA & POI, the ghost ring sat too high for my liking. So my solution was to file some off the front sight. While I was at it, I put a slight forward slope on the top of the front sight to help eliminate any blur and/or reflection that I occasionally got before this mod. Worked well, and now the ghost ring doesn't sit quite so tall off the barrel. Along those same lines, I find that the rounded ghost ring doesn't get hung up on stuff (like backpack straps, etc) like the original sight did. And it also doesn't stab me in the shoulder when carrying the gun all willy-nilly old school (upside down & pointed backwards). No, I'm not going to re-blue the filed top, as I plan on DuraCoating the entire firearm in the future (GASP!) Sight picture: And here are some initial results from some ammo testing with the ghost ring. The Aguila result is kinda strange. You'd think that I had looked at the paper, and perhaps adjusted. But in reality, I took all the shots from a seated position, using a non-attached bipod as a rest, without checking the target between groups. I could not see any of the holes from my shooting position. Perhaps the large center target had some effect on my visual subconscious. Weird. I dunno. And yes, that is also 3 shots of American Eagle. So, to make a long story interesting... yeah, I REALLY think this new sight is a huge functional improvement.

What!!!!! you mean you shot even worse with the old sight?!?!?!?!?!?! Just kidding thanks for the report might just have to consider that if I decide I really don't wanna put scopes on mine. See how my old eyes deal with the williams peep on my 22 mag before I make hard decisions.

I like it. Lots easier than drill and tap for a Williams 5D..

Yes, it works in much the same way as a true peep sight. The biggest difference being that the ghost ring does not block out as much of the view of the target. It's also not quite as accurate as a tiny peep. So the ghost is more suited to moving shots and closer targets, IMHO.

I recently purchased a rimfire receiver peep sight from Brownells #661-000-044wb for $90 I fits in the scope groves on the .22 barrel and is similar to the old Redfield peep sight. Haven't tried it out yet but will post my results with it

Cool. I just ordered the very same ghost sight (but with the Williams Slugger vent rib base) to try out on my Valmet. If it works out well, I might have to try this with my 24S-C. Though the front sight may be too low on the older model 24s with the fully soldered barrels.....
I've never tried an aperture sight so far away from the eye. You say it's not too bad? Do you think a feller could put one of the threaded peep towers in there and screw in a smaller aperture for tack driving work? Or is it just too far from the eye to use a smaller hole?

After nearly a decade of always being either a day late or a dollar short, I finally got my hands on an in the box Redfield RE-24 peep sight. I mounted it up on a 24E-DL with a great regulated barrel set, zeroed it at the range, and promptly took it out jackrabbit hunting. Peeps on these guns are truly amazing. Had a lot better shooting than I typically get with the factory leaf sight.
I mounted mine a lot closer to the breech to give me a longer sight plane. Of course the peep is a lot smaller in diameter than a ghost ring which you would want much further away from your eye. I may have to pick up one of those receiver mount peep sights from Brownell's for a comparison. Looks pretty solid and comes with 2 diameter peeps.

I think a true peep sight would be great on this gun. I'd like to see some photos of the peeps sights you guys are mentioning mounted on your rifles. Leaf – I think this particular mounting spot would be too far away for most aperture disks. But who could really know, unless you try something? I went with the ghost ring because I mounted it so far from the eye. And I mounted it so far from the eye, because I still want to use the grooved space for a red dot. So I am just setting this sight up as a backup, and will have a red dot mounted soon enough. I'm actually not even done messing around with the sight yet. I have now turned the ghost ring insert around backwards, and will be shaving off some of the back of the sight. I'm doing this to give myself a little more mounting space for my red dot. I'll post pics when I get the red dot on it. Probably in a new thread. Can you tell I am a bit of a tinkerer?

Carl, please let us know how the sight you bought from Brownells works out. I would like to know if it has enough adjustment to work with the original front sight. I am looking to purchase the same sight but do not want to replace the front sight if I don't have to. Give us a report when you get back from the range.

I made a DIY peep sight for a Brno 468 'Garden Gun' some years back. It works okay, especially for the price (<$1.00). I glued a plumbing gasket on the rear sight blade of the gun. Looks ugly as heck but zero wait time and its held up to field carrying for some years. As they say - FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES ONLY. I could file the notch more open, but I've left it alone so far. Just be sure and center the aperture on the top of the blade and you should be okay - the gasket is less than 1/8" outside diameter.

Good idea and I am always for function over form. Thinking a itty bitty washer or even a lil nut could be easily soldered on and be even more durable. Probably just as ugly but just as functional. Givin me ideas Thanks!!!

You are welcome. The plumbing gasket is soft and pushes over. I figured a hard object like a washer could be knocked off easier. Its why I went this way instead. I could be way off though.

Nah sounds like it works for you and that is what counts. I don't even know if you are set up to solder if you don't know and dont have it wouldn't be the easy way. I always got change things and make em more difficult than they need to be.
