Hello everyone,
i just got my first 24 series S (22mag/20ga) a few days ago (traded a maverick 88 for it). I've been going through the post on here looking for how to improve certain things on it. I found the information on putting a ghost ring sight on it. I really don't like the folding rear sight that's on it plus it's missing the adjustment part in the center of it. What I haven't been able to find is anything on modifying a stock buttstock into one that has a trap door like on the camper model. Has anyone done this or know if a camper buttstock will work on my 24? I know I can get the camper buttstock w/o the trap door for around $50 online.

One thing to consider is that the 24C has a pretty short length of pull - around 13 1/2". You might be able to fit it, but it's going to feel and handle oddly with a full-length barrel. Not sure if there is a different stock bolt, either, but that would be easy to fix.
As to converting your own stock, I've thought about it for a 24V of mine. Haven't actually tried it, but it seems to me that it would be simple enough. You'd need longish drill bits for the holes. The obvious space for the 20 ga shells would be in the existing hole for the stock bolt and (being still at the 'mental screwing around' stage) I'd want to check its diameter to be sure it would take them. Otherwise, trying to find a suitable drill bit in 0.77"+ might be difficult.
The buttplate would need to be drilled or cut away to match the holes, of course. Making the aluminum slider would be quite easy. It'd be your call whether to rebate the butt plate or the stock for clearance.
Bottom line? One evening with the right tools and prior prep, two tops.

I didn't even think about the length of pull! That takes care of that idea. I've been tossing around doing this to my double badger that I have for a long while now but havent gotten around to doing it. Hopefully I can get some free time before I go back to work and get both done. I Would imagine the less holes you have to drill the better off you will be for the integrity of the stock. The last thing I would want to to fall and have the stock crack or break. I have seen pictures of people having the bottom of their stocks modified as extra ammo holder. Think something like a m6 scout but on the bottom without a cover. That though seems way more of a headache then it's worth. I'm a firm believer in the KISS principal.

Well, if it's KISS, how about a butt ammo holder?

I do have one of those cheap elastic ones in a box that I could modify it to work. Maybe get some elastic from the craft store and sew on some holders for the 22mag. I may even have one of those butt stock pouches w/ Velcro on the outside that I can modify to work as well. You were right on the size of the stock screw hole too! I got a chance to measure it tonight and it's right at the diameter of the lip of the brass on a 20ga. I think I'll stick with the whole KISS concept for right now unless I don't like the way my ammo holders come out.

Goose, don't know what part of Tennessee you're in. But if you're close to Middle Tennessee, I' be glad to show you one of my 24s that has a "professional" buttstock ammo holder done on it. It's a .30-30/20 Gauge. It's done like the 24C, but the buttplate is thick aluminum. The ammo gate is aluminum, and the pistol grop has a matching aluminum spacer under the cap. It looks sharp, and the aluminum butt plate ads about 1/2" to the LOP. Just PM me if you'd like to see it and possibly take pics of it. Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your Savage 24. I like all of mine... including my original 24C.
