Hello all and thanks a ton to the owners, moderators and contributors to this site. It’s a great forum with a ton of information.
So here’s my story. I learned of the Savage Model 24 about two years ago. Since then I have been fairly obsessed with finding one for a good price in a 22mag, .222 or .223 over 20 gauge. My hope was to find one in decent shape, pay a good price, refinish the stock if need be, add a peep/ghost sight and cerakote the metal. The Cerakote idea is so I could just keep it in the truck for those impromptu trips to the woods looking for rabbits/grouse/pheasant/turkey/deer (depending on caliber), etc. and not worry about hurting the bluing.
I’ve been pretty patient in my search and so until about a week ago I had restrained from purchasing any that I deemed were overpriced or not of the caliber I wanted. Then I wandered into a little shop up the road a piece. There I found a Stevens model 22/410 for what I thought was a really good deal. So I himmed and hawed and finally decided it would have to come home with me. So now I have a combo gun, but it’s not really what I was looking for. What I’m not sure of is what I should do with it. I don’t know the real value of the gun and in researching this site it appears that the gun has to be from at least before 1950. I can’t find a serial number just a patent number. So I’m wondering now, do I have a gun that is worth quite a bit more than I paid for it? If so, should I put it in the safe (not my usual plan, I buy ‘em to shoot ‘em)? Do you think I could trade it for the caliber I really want? Or should I just go forward with my original plan and trick it out a bit? That may be blasphemous for a rifle of its age and I imagine my grandpa might backhand me for it if he was still around. Anyways, thanks for reading and thanks all for any input.
