I have a 24c that will not eject the 20ga shell. I have had 2 gunsmiths look at it without success. I was thinking about a barrel insert, either in .44 mag or .45lc/.410. Any suggestions?

Is the extractor broken ? Or just a missing part ? A lot of people with broken extractors just use a knife point to dig out shell, using the back of point against the cartridge rim. I have a MCA barrel insert for the shotgun barrel, an 18" 30-30 Winchester chambered. It is sloowww to load and gains at least a pound in weight, but does increase versatility of gun. I bought it as a back-up firearm for deer camp. A .22lr / 20 G. / 30-30 is a good combination. A .22lr / .44 Magnum sounds pretty handy too though.

Just to be clear, what happens when you try to eject a freshly-fired 20 ga hull? When the breech opens, does it pop out a little bit or does it stay flush with the end of the barrel?

^ What he said. They don't have ejectors so it obviously shouldn't. Extraction is another matter.

No airborne hulls, to be sure. Curiously, looking elsewhere on this site, the 24C exploded part diagram shows piece 29 as an 'ejector', whereas the equivalent piece for the 24V is an 'ejector lever'. Apparently Savage changed terminology as well as design!
The point for the OP however is that opening the breech should leave the 20 ga rim standing out proud of the rear fmthe barrel, capable of being easily pulled out by one's fingers.

No, it's too late and I'm not tracking. The 24V has an 'extractor lever'.

I don't recall ever seeing a 24 that threw the hull free from the barrel (ejector). If it part lifts the rim away from barrel, that is how the firearm operates, at least in my limited experience.

Curious - what is the accuracy of your MCA 18" 30-30?
I have seen different results on YouTube, however not sure any were from MCA.
Thanks for any information.

As both CAS and jrguerra have previously stated the Model 24 does not eject the the hull free from the barrel since the Model 24 does not have an ejector, only an extractor. If the extractor is working correctly then when the barrel is opened the hull is pulled partially out of the barrel and must be manually removed.
I have no experience with the longer MCA barrel inserts. I do have a lot of experience with a set of barrel inserts, about 6" long that fit a 12 ga. barrel that came with an X-caliber combination gun that I do use that are fairly accurate to 25 - 50 yards. The set of 8 inserts are: 9 MM, .357 Mag/.38 SPL, .380 ACP, .40 S&W, .44 Mag, .45 ACP, .410 ga./.45 Colt and 20 ga.

Yeah ejectors would be a bad idea on a two caliber combo gun, you'd be chucking live shells way too often.

Curious - what is the accuracy of your MCA 18" 30-30? I have seen different results on YouTube, however not sure any were from MCA. Thanks for any information. From the standard iron sights of a 24C, Remington 'yellow box' 150 SP will get 3" - 4" at 75 yards the last time I checked. For my purpose (wood range white-tail deer), that is plenty good enough. Along with the partial box, I have two other boxes of the same ammunition with matching run #. Hopefully, those results will hold. Different ammunition make - bullet weights - ammo runs will change those numbers. Don't expect the accuracy by replacing a dedicated gun with these inserts and hope for the best seems to be how these things work. Hope this helps.
