Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have a 24D. .22/20guage. I took it apart to clean it, put it all back together. Had a little trouble hooking the barrel pivot on but I think I got it. opened and closed it put front wood grip on, still fine, but now I cant open it... The release lever wont go left or right. So after lurking here I read "take the stock off" and look in the receiver. but that slotted head screw is REALLY tight. is there a special tool for that??? any ideas? am I going in the right direction? Thanks in advance. Mike

That happens sometimes when they have been together for so many years. What i did-went to Sears, got a hammer drive impact wrench with the screwdriver bits, and a long 1/2" extension. Put the tool together, largest slot bit it has, with the long extension-usually about 12" will do it, sometimes you will need a bit longer. And whack it with a hammer-following instructions of course-turn the handle of the impact driver the right direction! Usually a hit or two helps. But then again, i already had the tools! dont try any oils, as getting the oils to where they need to go will cause problems with the wood stock.

Thanks, jeffb1911. I got the screw out with a visegrip on the screwdriver. then removed the wooden stock. Actually it fell off while I was looking for more screws. Then I removed the detent spring, then the lever and handle. I still couldn't pull back on the part that frees up the latch. banged on it with a rubber hammer, tried again and again, finally it opened. I found that on the barrels is a little latch and if it's pushed in to much it gets stuck, so I filed it down, sanded it smooth and greased it till it wouldn't stick. now all is well. Thanks Mike

I am having the same problem opening the action on a 24v. I have removed the buttstock and tried everything I can but can't free the latch to open the action. Any more details on how to do this?

I just went through this this weekend with my newly acquired P version. Take the gun apart and find the release mechanism under the trigger. Soak it down with some break free or similar gun oil/cleaner. After setting a while, force the blade down by hand. It may stick in the down position. If so, simply slide a flat head screwdriver under the edge, twist and pull forward and this will release the blade again. Repeat as needed. I went through this 2 or 3 times and now it is as good as new.

An overnight soak of clp break free did the trick. I was able to break it open and clean it good. I am now finding that the firing pin isn't hitting on the top barrel (223) hard enough to fire every time. I saw a "how to" on the FAQ page. I will have to see if this helps in my situation.
