Hi all. I'm a newbie looking for a little guidance. I recently came into possession of two 24c's (both .22/20). One is a series p and the other is a series s. They both belonged to my father, who used them for small game hunting, although they have now sat unused in an old barn for probably 15 years or more. I am planning to clean and recondition both as much as possible. I'm not completely new to guns and shooting, but have no experience with breaking down anything other than handguns for regular cleaning.
The series p is in rougher condition with some minor rust on the barrels, puke green paint on the stocks, and beautiful orange spray paint on the front sight (dad was not real concerned about his guns being pretty). There is also no shortage of dirt and grime to clean off as well. I'd like to refinish the stocks and re-blue the metal after a thorough cleaning/degreasing. I' m starting the process with the smaller series p, and have a good portion of it disassembled. The problem is, I cannot for the life of me figure how to get the butt stock off. An internet search returns several posts about removing a screw/bolt in the hole where the shells are stored, but there is no such thing on this gun. The storage chamber is obviously there, but no screw to remove.
I'm sure i'm missing something obvious, but could someone clue me in on this one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not disassembled my 24Cs, but I've taken apart a lot of other 24s and all, Tenite or wood, were held on by a single bolt with a round slotted head. I can't imagine how the 24C stock could be held on with anything but a stock bolt. There has to be a bolt in there somewhere, probably out of sight unless you can peer into the stock hole with a flashlight or bore light. It takes a sort of long, stout screwdriver to reach in. Sometimes it has to be done by touch rather than by sight -- poking around with a screwdriver until you can position the bit in the slot. I'll be interested to see what advice others may offer.

My Savage 24C series P has the bolt directly in line with the drilled hole for the storage of the 20 gauge shell in the buttstock. What do see when you look into your 20 gauge compartment?
