Hello, I have a savage model 24 b-dl and the hammer no longer goes front the entire way. before tearing it apart I was hoping maybe someone would know what's wrong with it? When I pull the trigger and release the hammer slowly it only goes maybe 2/3 of the way down. I remember years ago when it happened I heard a rattling but now realize (i think) that's the lower firing pin that doesn't have a spring moving around. Thanks for any help!

I think they all do that when realising the hammer slowly by giving it thumb pressure. Have you dropped the hammer on a live round?
Try firing it. It should slam forward all the way and hit the firing pin.

I'll have to try. I haven't shot the thing in probably 10 years and cant exactly remember what the issue was other than it wouldn't fire on just one of barrels.

I agree with sakoluvr -- some Model 24s have a really spongy-feeling hammer (I think it's called a rebound hammer), almost to the point of feeling defective. Shoot it to see what happens, and come back if there's a problem.

hello again, i took the stock off to get a better view of whats going on, i see now how the hammer works and that with momentum, it travels further than the point wear the spring quits pushing. so if i keep trigger pulled i can push the hammer front until it hits the .22 firing pin. but from this view i see that i think im missing some internals. the selector button on the inside just has a post with nothing attached. shouldnt there be a selector piece attached to that? also it appears im missing the firing pin retension plate. i remember the 22wmr working on it and i see that the actual hammer itself can strike the firing pin with the top edge hitting in the middle of the pin, i imagine from not having the selector in there and retension plate. i guess that explains why the shotgun never worked. just by looking at the exploded diagram view its a little tough to envision what all is missing. looks like a little more work than i originally thought!

I just got my hands on a Mod 24 22/410....I haven't fired it yet, but it appears that the firing pin strikes the .410 fine and moves the firing pin...but when I move the hammer to .22 it stops short of striking the firing pin. If I hold the trigger back it, I can push the hammer to the pin.....any suggestions?? I am new to the 24 and am not really familiar with it.....
