I have an old 24S (22lr/20 ga.) I would like to upgrade the sights to be peep sights. I’ve reviewed the threads here and am still a bit confused about the best option. It would be very nice to have a fiber optic front sight. I have replaced sights on several fire arms so removing the rear sight and installing a new one into the dovetail is not a problem. I would prefer to not redrill and tap the front sight, although it sounds like I might have to do that.
The second question I have is what is the consensus about firing slugs out of the 20 ga barrel? My concern is more about harm to the gun than accuracy or range.

I have Williams Firesights (for a Marlin) on my S-D. Before you do anything, check to make sure the dovetail isn't canted (mine was). OEM sights grab the rounded top of the dovetail. They don't fill the dovetail like regular dovetailed sights. I had to have the barrel drilled and tapped for the front sight. I have had no issues with the S-D when I fire 20 gauge (shot OR slugs). The S-D i have has the V shaped (at the stock) receiver. My 24V-D .222 over 20 gauge on the other hand, had a "repaired by a professional" straight side stock and it split at the repair when I fired slugs through it. I ordered a used replacement that will arrive Friday. It only split when I fired slugs as they recoil more than shot. I have never fire 3" shells through either gun, even though it should be able to do that. The S-D didn't like anything on the rimfire grooves when I fired the shotgun barrel, but my grooves were shallow on the left side. I have had that repaired also, but I decided I have more accurate guns for .22lr and a scope kind of kills the vibe. I bought it for bunnies, grouse, and squirrels. As far as peep sites go, I have one that I have yet to use. It's a Lyman 53D, which is not made anymore. I bought it on eBay. They sometimes appear, but usually don't have the mounting screws or apertures. I am trying out the S-D at the end of this month. If the Firesights suffice, I might offer the Lyman sight for sale. It has the mounting screws and 2 apertures. Here is one currently on eBay (sans screws):https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lyman-53D-Adjustable-Shotgun-Receiver-Sight-Savage-24-22-410-219-/113660527954.

I should have asked, do you have a "series S" or a "S-A through E"? Series S has the release for the action in front of the trigger guard. The latter have a release lever on the right side of the receiver. The Lyman sight mounts on the left side of the receiver using two 5-40 screws. Series S doesn't seem to have those mounting holes from what I see on Gunbroker.com.

The gun is not in front of me right now, but as I remember, the release is on the right side of the receiver behind the trigger guard. The gun has the welded barrels and dates from the mid 1960’s. I don’t remember any mounting screw holes on the left side of the receiver but I’ll look next time I handle the gun. Maybe the the Lyman sight would work. Would I still have to replace the front sight? By you other posts, I think we live in the same area.

You shouldn't have to replace the front sight as they were made for the 24S-(Whatever you have) models. The sight has elevation and windage adjustments. Just so you know, it would be $60, just like the one on eBay. They get more expensive if you have the original box, and the screws in the sealed little bag, because "vintage". Luckily I have no box and the screws were had from a gunsmith (Burris scope ring screws). The apertures are from Midway (Williams).

I’m not sure if the Lyman will fit without drilling. I’ll have to inspect the gun and see. I’ll be busy until next week, so it will be a bit before I get to this. I saw in some of the posted pictures that someone has mounted a seeall sight. I happen to have one of those laying around doing nothing, so I might try that first. That means I would need a weaver or Picatinny rail attachment. There are some rather inexpensive versions for 3/8” but I’m not sure which is the version that works best. Any recommendations?

I have not had success attaching sights (Red Dot, and Reflex) to my S-D rimfire grooves.I understand the SeeAll doesn't rely on a front sight, which is good. People have suggested getting airgun stuff since they use similar 3/8 dovetail.

I have no personal experience installing peep sights on a Savage 24. I do, however, shoot rifled slugs out of my 24-C, which has a cylinder bore. I have had no problems shooting slugs or buck.

Slugs are fine. Any peep type sight you use, whether you track down one of the old one's made for the 24, buy a modern 22 dovetail peep, or cobble something together, you're going to need a taller front sight. That's not as easy to deal with. Depending on the gun / sight, assuming they front base is big enough you could have the blade milled off, a pocket machined into the base, and a new sight added. That will cost some real dollars. A friend who has many old rifles and likes to add tang sights to them, but doesn't want to ruin their value by altering the front sight, makes his own fix with this setup. Epoxied on, so you can remove them without a trace if you ever wanted to. Maybe not the prettiest and not combat worthy but it works.
