In looking over some of my 24s, I noticed an old Tenite gun (Stevens Model 22/410) has had the side selector parts removed and replaced with a hammer selector. I know the hammer selector is the preferred (i.e., sane) way to leave it, but, be that as it may, I want to return it to a side selector. My question: Will both the "old" and "new" selector parts work in the Model 22/410 if I use the correct (screw-on vs. snap-on) side button? And am I sadly correct that the mainspring has to come out (and go back in! ) when replacing the side selector parts? I'll appreciate any information. Thanks.

Removing the mainspring is the only method I know and have done personally - with two hands all be it. Not fun but after the second or third attempt you learn how to do it the "easy" way.
As far as the selector is concerned, I am not able to offer much assistance but the two I have installed with screw and button looked very similar, just didn't think to compare at the time. I would think that as long as all the parts used were of the same style that things will work out for you in the long run.

There was virtually no significant design changes to these guns when the Stevens 22-410 went to the early Savage Model 24, only cosmetics. This includes the Model 24, 24A, 24B, 24E, and 24H. They remained as only available in .22lr over .410 with .22wrm being added in 1961. The right side selector remained the same dimension with the only change being the screw attached button to the snap on.
There was a significant change to the frames in the De Luxe Line because of the added size requirements for 20 gauge.
So what you end up with is 3 distinct selectors: the right side screw on or snap on button selector for the 22-410 and early Model 24, the right side snap on button selector for .22/.410 De Luxe Model 24, and the left side snap on button selector for .22/20ga De Luxe Model 24.
The trick is making sure you have or can find the correct one. Hope this helps.
