Met a man who said he had a Savage 12/357 max,swore up and down that that was what it was.I've never heard of such an animal---any body know anything?

To my knowledge, the .357 Rem. Max was only a factory option in 20 Gauge lower. Two different configurations, one with standard shoulder stock, the other with both the shoulder stock and pistol grip. This was with the earlier offerings, not the later 24F that came in 12 Gauge. That came in .22lr / .22 Hornet / .223 Remington / 30-30 Winchester.
But who knows, maybe Savage made another version in .357 Rem. Max. If you get some photos, be nice if you shared them with the rest of the 24 clan. :^)

24F also was available in .17/12
