Hey everyone,
I've just picked up a Savage 24A in 22mag-410 Such a cool little gun and not very common here in New Zealand.
I have a question about the 410 barrell,
Is it choked? And can I shoot rifled slugs out of it?
Sorry not sure how to add a picture.

Welcome to the forum from Fl. Unfortunately I'm not able to give an answer to your questions but I'm sure someone will be along soon who will.

Using the sticky here, find the year of your 24. If it's significantly newer than mine, the following may not apply.
Mine is a 1958 vintage, brazed barrels, etc. My choke measures .375" at the muzzle and the choke extends at least 2-3" back. Choke is easily measured using a dial caliper. Even a cheap plastic one will be satisfactory.
I've fired lots of Foster-type slugs in mine with no ill effect; other than that my two barrels are not very well regulated. Most slugs measure .400" in diameter, but are of soft lead, easily reduced, I reckon, by the choke.
Some years ago, I bought a semiauto AK47 clone in .410, along with a bunch of Russian ammo for same. The slugs were of sabot type, with a slug of some sort of hard alloy measuring .411". I eschewed using them in my Mdl 24.
I've also declined to shoot any hard slugs of other brands. There are lots of slugs useful in a Tauras Judge or S&W Governor that I'm just not willing to risk in my Savage.

Welcome to the 24 Savage forum savagekiwi. Like vancmike mentioned, the sticky topic HOW TO ID STEVENS SAVAGE COMBO GUNS may be of assistance om determination of your .410 choke (if any).
That was a great find, that combination is a great foraging gun in the woods. More open spaces, the .410 may be lacking due to lack of shot at longer distances.
I hope you find your answer here soon.

#8 in the FAQ on Savage24.com states slugs are OK in our model 24's with no mention of gauge. It specifically states, "Fire away"

The choke should be a full choke, or slightly more open sometimes. Usually they are choked a bit loose for full, kind of between Modified and Full by measurement. But i have had some that were very tight full choke too. Fortunately, slugs are made to go through such chokes. The "rifled" slugs are made to deform while going through the constriction and not to impart any spin. Fostners excel at this since they have a hollow skirt. Brennekes do not deform in the same way, but i've fired many through the Savage 24s without issue.
