Hey folks. Total newb here, to all things gun related if I'm being honest. My grandfather passed not long ago and left me a couple of his guns. And this is the first time I have ever held or even considered using a gun. I started inspecting the rifles, did some research and found that I am now the proud over of a Savage Model 24, 410/22 Over Under. I genuinely know nothing about guns, but have been doing a fair bit of reading over the last few hours trying to learn what I can without having any real, hands-on practical use experience. I noticed the first couple times I had tried to dry fire, (yes, I now know *not* to dry fire) that the hammer didn't appear to be making contact with the .22 Firing pin. So I got to reading. I found out about.. What do they call it? Open action? Holding the trigger down allows the hammer to be moved freely? So I started experimenting with that. In doing so, I noticed that whether the side selector is in the up or down position appears to make no difference at all. The hammer just always strikes where the selector on the hammer dictates. Is it then safe to say my side selector is in need of repair?
I also find that I get two different behaviors from the 2 firing pins--- When I press the hammer against the .410 firing pin, and remove it, the pin stays in position. But when I press the hammer against the .22 pin, as soon as the hammer is removed, the pin slides back out of view. I'm hoping to learn which of these functions is normal operating behavior. And with all these things considered, is there any indication as to what the issue may be that is causing the hammer to not make contact with the .22LR firing pin? As I said earlier, if I press the hammer forward while holding the trigger, the 22 pin slides out and back in easily. But when I had dry fired with the hammer toggle in the "over" position, I saw no movement from the pin whatsoever. I live in a city so unfortunately I can't just go outside and try to actually fire live rounds. But from what I can see, I am assuming it would fire the .410 no problem (after dry firing in the under position, I can see that the pin was pushed out, whereas the over position had no apparent movement) I had planned to take it on a camping trip to a cabin down south with some buddies to do some shooting this weekend, bu if the thing is going to need serious repairs, I would probably opt to leave it behind and just take the Winchester Model 67.. Which sucks since my buddy told me this thing was kind of special as far as guns go, and I was pretty excited to put my grandpa's final gift to use.
Anyway I appreciate any information/assistance.
