I was wondering if there were any unusual custom Savage 24s out there? Did they ever make 16 or 28 gauge models? My wife says that if she could have her way, she'd get a .22 Hornet/28 gauge. One old timer I know claimed he owned a .22 hornet/.410 at one point that was definately a Savage, but I've never read or heard of another. Just wondering.

So far in my research of the Savage 24, the rumors are just rumors. I have yet to run into anything odd or custom from the factory in terms of caliber/gauge. I have seen end user customization of .222Rem turned into .219 Zipper,.30-30 Win converted to .30-30 Ackley Improved, and .22 Hornet into .22 K hornet.
As I've posted before, in the 1940's Marlin did have some out of the norm versions of thier Model 90 combo guns. The .22lr/.410 was most common. The was .218 Bee and .22 Hornet (both over .410) versions made, but Brophy put the total production for them at 250 or less. They also produced an experimental .30-30 over 20 (Savage didn't get there until the 1970's) but only ~20 were made.
The only thing truly odd from Savage was the Model 24C Series M Research & Development guns. These R&D guns exhibit different finishes, stock and forearm materials and colors, and crude modifications to the trapdoor buttplate. None of the ones I have encoutnered were chambered in anything other than .22lr/20. My best guess puts the total number of these produced at around 150.
Here is a list of the Savage factory Model 24 caliber/gauge combinations.
.17hmr/20 or 12 .22lr/.410 or 20 .22wrm/.410 or 20 .22 Hornet/20 or 12 .222 Remington/20 or 12 .223 Remington/20 or 12 .30-30 Winchester/20 or 12 .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum/20 .357 Remington Maximum/20

For the sake of completeness Savage also had guns branded with their name, but made by other companies.
The Savage 2400 made by Valmet came in: .222 Remington/12 (2 3/4" only) .308 Winchester/12 (2 3/4" only)
The Savage 389 made by Marocchi: .222 Remington/12 (3 inch) .308 Winchester/12 (3inch)
