I have a Weaver (model 74?) scope base with the see-thru rings on it. Problem is when you look through the rings you can't see the rear iron site. This makes the "see thru" aspect almost worthless for any real sighting.
Anyone have a solution for fixing this while keeping the scope?
Trying to set this up as a turkey gun so I need to be able to actually aim both barrels .

There are several solutions On a couple of my 24's w/see thru rings I have used my dremel to grind a flat spot in the cross bolt of the mount screw--not the best answer but it will allow you to see the sight the more acceptable solution is to get a new set of iron sights--specifically ones that are higher in profile--and yes I know if your 24 has the "banded front sight combo" this is not the easiest answer--but if you have a screw set on the front sight with a standard dovetail rear one new sights are available--I get mine from Brownells and in the catalog is a pictorial formula for determing the way to calculate sight height.I say all this because one of the most important (at least to me) ways to utilize a 24 is to be able to use a scope for the rifle and the iron sights for the shotgun. If you have a banded front sight, then you will need a smith or a machine shop to remove the front blade and cut in a dovetail to the upper portion of the barrel band OR cut a portion (in the form of a slot space) from the top of the barrel band wide enough to allow a screw hole to tapped into the rifle barrel which will allow the mounting of new front sight.I have seen this type and there is enough material to still control the upper barrel,I think Savage made this system on some guns--O'dell does that sound correct?

[/img] hi, i have a savage 24, about 1960, with a great see-thru mount set up. i had a set of high solid mounts for a browning pump .22. just ground out the base and put them on, no machining, changing sights, etc. with a leuopold 2-7 compact scope they sit just about perfect from the start. the mount allows full use of the origional sights and the scope effortlessly, compact & rugged, too. best of all, no alterations to your gun and inexpensive. a photo would explain it better, so if you want i can send pics from my phone.
