I did a search and did not find this as a previous thread, so I'll just go ahead and ask. Has anyone tried using 5.56x45 in their .223 model 24? I am a veteran and I am aware of the dimensional and pressure differences between the two cartridges, however I am curious. I do not need a safety lecture, I am simply asking if anyone has tried it and to what effect? This is posed as a worst case/emergency scenario question, are the actions strong enough to use military ammo?

As a side note, what got me thinking about this was the fact that in my various emergency kits I will commonly pack a few .22lr tracers, to be used for signaling. I recently aquired a model 24v series D in .223/20ga and military surplus tracers naturally came to mind.

Thanks, I guess my search was too specific by entering "5.56x45". However, having read that thread, I saw alot of history about the two cartridges and references to shooting 55gr ammo and it's instability, but I didn't see where anyone said " I shot some military 5.56 in my 24". Maybe I'm not reading between the lines enough or I'm lost in reloading terms, but I wanna know if the shorter leade in my 24 will compromise my action if (BIG if) I had to shoot military ammo in it. I'm not as concerned about the stability and accuracy of the heavier round, just the possibility of breaking my gun. Thanks for any info and feel free to set me straight if I've missed the obvious.

Remove your extractor and see if a 5.56 will chamber fully without forcing it, if so I would say that you would be fine.
