I just purchased a very nice looking Model 24. I believe it is a 1958 model. It appears to have an I31 stamped on the right hand side. This gun has a wooden trigger guard on it. Has anyone else ever seen one with a wooden trigger guard? I am the third owner of this gun. The first two owners were a father and son. The son is now in his 70's. Does anyone have any info about the trigger guard?

Can you post a picture? SC

I have to call shenanigans on whom ever told you a wooden trigger guard is original. I personally own and have looked at more Savage 24 guns and literature than most and there is no mention of wooden trigger guards and this is the first time I've seen anything like it. That isn't one of the deluxe model guns either. SC is right, just a custom replacement by a good craftsman.

Thanks for the comments on the wooden trigger guard. I couldn't imagine that they would ever make a wooden trigger guard. But I thought it was worth asking. I posted another picture in the photo section. It is a nice looking gun and whoever made the trigger guard did an excellent job. savage24forum.boards.net/index.cgi?board=pics&action=display&thread=229

I never looked at the second picture, until now. Definitely after market stock & forearm. But if you like it-enjoy and go hunting.

I don't know that it's after market, just added to. Went white line spacer happy. Added a grip cap with some swell in it. Unless… Fajen offered 24 stocks way back when. The Weatherby "California style" stuff that was the craze.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm looking for two or three 24V metal, cast aluminum, trigger guards. Anyone got a drawer full? Good job on the wood trigger guard, but I'll hold out for cast aluminum... or whatever it is...not the thin metal straps bent like a trigger guard. Big Kelley, got any you could part with? Thanks.

I bought my first 24 in 1958 (still have it) and mine had some very nice wood. Don't remember the shade of stain, since early-on, I did the opposite of what the OP's original owner did: I shaved off the pistol grip to make a straight stock, slimmed the forearm significantly, sanded off the original finish and rubbed in about 10 coats of triple-boiled linseed oil which resulted in a dark, walnut look(still looks good, thank you). Before you yell at me for the modifications, hey, I was a teenager at the time.....
The point is, at least in 1958, Savage was using some pretty nice walnut on the Mdl 24....and others models as well, I presume. Someone "California-Weatherbied" the OP's gun, as well as adding the peep sight. I wouldn't be surprised if the craftsman used the original stock as a base.
Pretty good job on the trigger guard.....and you have to admit it fits the look of the rest of the stock-work!
