I'm going to buy a AR/sporting rifle (aka Black Gun) in 308 win(has to be 308) soon and I wondered if anyone had any advice as to which manufacturer was best. I'm thinking DPMS,PTR,ARMALITE,FN,CENTURY--ETC H&K is probaly out of my price range

Hey bigK, I missed you again at the show 2 weeks ago....are you hiding off in the corner or somethin, maybe gettin a burger and a coke when i show up?...lol Anyways for the last 6 months or so ive been doing the AR thing....the 308 version your talking about would be the AR-10 i believe. As for makers...the choice is yours, they all function about the same(you would be searching for quality and with that comes a price tag),although i dont know why pricing is so diff. for the 15,Dpms seems to have a cheaper price for the 15 i know...cant offer a best brand due to i dont have one.I have a Windham(former makers of bushmaster...same people, same shop 5-7 years later---compete clause when the guy sold) and dont know if they even offer a 10(could check their website). So Windham is the best in my mind.Ive beat the hell outta mine with all kinds of good and crap ammo as fast as i could pull the trigger...never a fail.I got mine before the prices went nuts for around $900. What i have seen and im sure you have to at the show is the 10 is way more $$$ than the 15.I would think the prices will still get lower by the end of the year for everything.Should be a sweet round in that type of settup.I want one also as i have thousands of 308 i've perfected for my heavy barrel 700.Maybe next year. I'll look harder for ya next time. Sorry guys for kinda hijacking the 24 site on a diff subject....but he did ask...lol

The 308's are something I've avoided so I won't be much help. IIRC there's two different types based on two different magazine styles. One preferred back during the ban because it used common available preban mags. Now that the federal ban has gone, the other is more popular/desired. Which maker is which style now I couldn't say.
My experience in general with DPMS has always been so so, nothing bad but not thrilled with them. You mention Century, I didn't know what/if they're selling anything AR10 related but avoid them at all costs.
I'd look into the Colts new jobber just to see the price, it my be way too high. Like I said , never dealt with the AR 10s too much. I've handled a few, even taken them apart, a DPMS, an old Armalite and a 3rd brand which I don't recall... though none enough to leave an impression on me. I also fiddled with a LaRue. That I CAN tell you was nicer than the others. lol And a lot more money.
