Yo! I have seen the recommended rear sights for the 24v. None of which look appealing to me. My gun has the little riser on the .222 barrel that the dovetailed sight mounts into. it also has the two D&T holes in the receiver for mounting a scope(?). I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with a peep sight in the rear dovetail or in the D&T holes in the receiver. I want one that has windage and elevation adjustments. I have seen a few that might work... If you have had success with this PLEASE post a photo! Thanks

I have been toying with the idea of a scope. Of course, it will make longer shots easier but I think it will take away from what I expect from this rifle. I don't want to worry about knocking the scope about when I'm in the brush. I plan to hunt mostly rabbit and pheasant with the gun. I have considered the Low-Pro sight from skinners, but without windage adjustments, long shot accuracy will suffer. BTW, my gun has the front ramp sight separate from the barrel lug. Is it a 3/8 dovetail?

usually the rear is grooved for the scope mount and thats a 3/8 if thats what you mean. if you're talking about the front sight then the savages I've had were a one piece ramp sight and the factory rear sight is a 3/8 dovetail

My receiver is not grooved. I see that the skinner low pro requires you to drift the front sight for windage adjustment. I have never messed with front sights on any gun I have ever owned. I guess Ive been lucky... I will see if I can post a pic or two.

Update: I decided to fab my own on the cheap. I took the Lyman blade sight and modified it. I cut a bicycle chain link in half and JB'd it to the sliding blade. I then roughed in the hole with a dremel and finished it with a reamer. My inspiration was the flip up sight for a mini 14. If this does not work, I think I will bite the bullet and get a gsmith involved. I still can't believe that with a tack driving round like the .222 that savage put such marginal sights on the gun...

when you get your sight done, I'd be interested in a photo (if it's successful!).
I know when I got my 222/20, I was pretty impressed with the accuracy with just the open sights.
But anything too cumbersome presents a conundrum: sure, it allows more accuracy with the rifled barrel, but may negate the usefulness of the rifle/shotgun combo concept. That's why I've resisted putting a scope on either of my 24s.....I have lots of rifles with scopes that are very accurate, thank you, and don't really want another.
The German drilling, which usually combines a double shotgun with 1,2 or even 3 rifle barrels, usually has a nifty claw scope mount. I once coordinated the firearms sale of an estate, and one drilling was a double 16-gauge, 7.60 WCF (30-30) 5.6x36R (22 Hornet) and 22 lfB (.22 l.r.). It carried a scope (which I didn't recognize) with a claw mount. We sold the firearm for a really, really insanely high price, because the buyer said the claw mount was a really insanely high-priced item.
Not sure a $3000 claw mount belongs on my $350 Sav Mdl 24V, but I see NECG sells several versions that might be adaptable to the Mdl 24....might cost you only $1000.
That being said, I also have several rifles with peep sights. Even in my advanced age, thanks to good ophthalmologists, I can shoot pretty accurately.....at least up to 100-150 yds (depending upon the critter/target). So a discrete peep sight for my 24V would be something I'd consider.
