Apparently the forum engine will not allow me to link photos from dropbox. Sorry for the hassle but I have spent two days scouring the web for info on this rifle. Things just don't seem fit with the dating methods I have found. Thank you again for anyone to take the time to give me hand here. This rifle will be going to my kids. It would be nice to be able to tell them something about it. Any other info you need I will post ASAP.

Welcome birmingham171.
The 24D Deluxe guns replaced the 24-DL De Luxe models right around 1970. As the name implies, it was an upgraded version of the standard model 24 with the high comb Monte Carlo style stock, pressed checkering on the wood, some even having the white spacers on the butt plate and grip cap, and of course the game scene side plates on the receiver.
Your 24 D Series P is a late 1970's gun from the peak of Savage combination production. During this time Savage had 5 combo guns in thier line up: the 24 Field Grade, 24C Camper's Companion, 24D Deluxe, 24V Centerfire, and the Savage 2400.
I hope this info helps and is something like what you were looking for.

That helps much, thank you odell. Any idea what the series P is? Just the combination of like you said, MC stock, pressed checkering, the white spacer, unfortunately no game scene...
