Howdy, I have a newly acquired 24s-e .22m/20 ga. Has anyone had their shotgun barrel tapped for screw in chokes? I have looked through all the past posts and didn't find anything.

You would get faster and more accurate results by contacting companies like Briley, Colonial Arms or Gander Mountain with your questions. SC

Actually Capt most 24 owners of the 20 ga variety probably don't think about choking their gun,but it would be an interesting proposition--I don't use 20 ga for turkey so I haven't considered choking one If you do --let us know how it works

My thinking is, the 24 is such a versatile small game gun that it could be a serious turkey gun also if it could be choked down. My bro-in-law is a big time turkey hunter and he uses a TC 20 ga. with a turkey choke. Here in Pa. we can use a rifle in the fall turkey season. I think the .22 mag. could reach out when the turk is beyond shotgun range. I put a scope on it today and was stunned at the 75 yd. accuracy. With the gun sand bagged it shoots so tight I could cover 3 shots with a dime.

I looked into having another gun done by Carlson. A 12ga pump. Because of the thickness of the barrel, or rather thinness, I could only get their thin wall chokes. Problem was, with the thin walls you can't shoot slugs or buckshot through them which was in large part what I used the gun for. (No steel or magnum loads either). So I didn't bother.
As for the 20 gauge Carlson lists:
"MINIMUM OUTSIDE BARREL DIAMETER MEASUREMENTS FOR CHOKE INSTALLATIONS:
20 ga. lead and steel shot system .700"
Never measured a 24 though.

My Savage 24 F 20 gauge barrel measures .750 outside diameter. Plenty of meat to install screw in chokes.

Yup the barrel is the thickest shotgun barrel I have ever seen. Finding the right gunsmith will be the tricky part. I have priced the cutter and tap and may find it cheaper to do it myself. Sending it off to Briley or such would exceed the limits of my purse.

Carlsons gets $125.00 Thats less than the cutter alone. You still need a tap and chokes, plus the skill to do it (or paying someone with the skill).
The $125 includes 3 chokes and wrenches. Figure that's at least $60 alone for the chokes. Unless you plan on doing many many guns with the tooling, that's hard to beat.

Sent barrel off to Carlson's yesterday. I'll post back after I get it back and put it on paper.

BUMMER!! Just got a call from Carlson's Choke Tubes they said they couldn't thread my barrel because the inside diameter was too large and the wads would catch on the edge of the choke tube. Apparently it is cylinder bore right up to the last inch where the choke starts, they need about 3" of some choke in the barrel. So now I pay 40 bucks shipping both ways to find out they can't do it. Too bad, I had high hopes for this little gun.

My great uncle had a Savage 24 in .22 magnum and 20 gauge with a scope and it was his go to turkey gun in Pennsylvania. I have pretty much duplicated his 24, scope and all, and with the right range would make a great turkey gun, though watch the rifle barrel in states that don't allow rifles for turkey (like Ohio) or a game warden will have some fun...

As long as you do not have any ammunition on your person for the rifle barrel, the Savage 24 is legal for fall hunting turkey in Ohio. SC

SC That is true but a .22 round is small and easily hidden so I would not be sure a jerky warden would not give you a shake down. Great gun for turkey though, especially with 3" magnums.
